Haiti Weather Hazards and Benefits Assessment

For

August 27 – September 2, 2009

During the last observation period, seasonal rounds of precipitation (25- 50 mm) were received throughout many parts of Haiti. The highest rainfall totals (>5 mm) were observed over the central highlands of Haiti, with an increase in moisture and precipitation in the southern departments of Haiti along the coast. Despite this increase in rain in southern Haiti, precipitation has continued to fall below-normal for many local areas since July. This has led to deteriorating soil conditions for cropping areas in the Nord Ouest, Sud, Nippes, and Sud Est departments of Haiti. Precipitation forecasts suggest another week seasonal showers across Hispaniola, with no significant relief for areas impacted by short-term dryness. A tropical wave in the southwestern Atlantic is expected to produce heavier rainfall amounts for some coastal areas in the Dominican Republic.
