Haiti Weather Hazards and Benefits Assessment

FEWS NET is a USAID-funded activity whose purpose is to provide objective information about food security conditions. Its views are not necessarily reflective of those of USAID. Harvesting activities continue across Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Field work was aided by dry conditions. Similar conditions are expected during the coming period.
Both the first and second seasons on Hispaniola were better than normal in most locations (see map above). Rainfall was generally plentiful and well distributed across the island.
Localized flooding may have decreased food security in localized areas. This primarily occurred as Hurricane Dean passed south of the island during around August 19th, and as Tropical Storm Noel made landfall in Haiti on October 29th and 30th. Throughout the season there were other localized flooding and landslide incidences. These flooding incidences will be limited in their overall short-term food security impact on Hispaniola.
