The USAID FEWS-NET

Haiti Weather Hazards and Benefits Assessment

For

September 6 – 12, 2007

FEWS NET is a USAID-funded activity whose purpose is to provide objective information about food security conditions. Its views are not necessarily reflective of those of USAID. The FEWS NET weather hazards assessment process and products include participation by FEWS NET field and home offices, NOAA-CPC, USGS, NASA, and a number of other national and regional organizations in the countries concerned. Questions or comments about this product may be directed to Chet.Schmitt@noaa.gov or 1-301-763-8000 x7519

Mitigation activities continued across Hispaniola, primarily the southern peninsula of Haiti. Although the island did not suffer a direct hit from Hurricane Dean, high winds, rough surf and heavy rain all impacted the island causing localized, most often limited damage to crops and infrastructure.

The first growing season on Hispaniola was normal in many areas, with better than normal growing conditions in some regions. Rainfall is expected to continue to be sufficient for the next week as second season crops have experienced well distributed rainfall that has only occasionally been excessive.
