Haiti Weather Hazards and Benefits Assessment

For

May 21 – May 27, 2009

During the last observation period, rainfall totals ranging between 25 and 50 mm were observed throughout much of Hispaniola, with a heavy precipitation event (> 175mm) that occurred near the central and northeastern departments of Haiti. Since the start of May, precipitation has remained above average across many communities in the higher elevations of Hispaniola, with some marginal rainfall deficits along the southern Haitian and Dominican Republic coastlines.

Rainfall forecasts suggest a week of heavy rainfall in the next observation period, with totals in excess of 75 -125mm along the coastal regions of Hispaniola. Depending on soil moisture conditions and the rate of rainfall over the next 3 days, there is a moderate potential for flooding and landslides near the coast and in high terrain areas across Hispaniola.
