Climate Prediction Center’s Central America Hazards Outlook December 05 - 11, 2019

The eastern part of Honduras has received light to moderate rain last week.

1) Between 10 to 50 mm of rainfall have been recorded over the eastern part of Honduras stretching southward to Nicaragua which could help reduce the abnormal dryness over the region. An acknowledgement of abnormal dryness over eastern Honduras and northeastern Nicaragua for the August-November ended season has been mentioned for this outlook.

The abnormal dryness has persisted over eastern Honduras and northeastern Nicaragua at the end of Postrera season

This past week, moderate to heavy rainfall have been recorded over Belize, Peten Department of Guatemala eastern Honduras and almost all Nicaragua except near the Gulf of Fonseca region while heavy rainfall have been registered over Panama and Costa Rica. Compared to the climatology, a large deficit has been observed over eastern Guatemala and a small part of northwestern Honduras. In contrast, a surplus has been noticed over the Peten Department of Guatemala and far southern Belize. This past thirty days, a strong deficit, less than 100 mm of rainfall, has been observed over southern Belize adding the actual abnormal dryness highlighted this past month over the eastern part of Central America. In contrast, an above normal rainfall have been recorded over the region near the Gulf of Fonseca, central Honduras , small part of far southern Nicaragua, and over southern/northern local areas of Guatemala. The vegetation health index has showed a deterioration over the northern/southern part of Guatemala, mostly over eastern Honduras and Nicaragua and Panama. In contrast, the region surrounding the Gulf of Fonseca has showed a good vegetation health conditions for the past week.

This coming week, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua would receive a seasonal rainfall. Light to moderate is expected respectively from the central to the northern part of Honduras. No tropical Cyclone are expected over the eastern Pacific and the Atlantic oceans for the coming days. A cold temperature, between 0-5 degrees C, is expected over the western part of Guatemala.
