Following a small increase in rainfall, moisture deficits are beginning to develop across Guatemala.

Although precipitation models had forecast a favorable increase in the amount and extent of rainfall last week, only small increases in precipitation were received during the last seven days throughout the Central America. According to satellite rainfall estimates, significantly heavy rainfall was received in eastern Mexico, with more moderate moisture recorded over northern Guatemala, and light rainfall amounts in the higher elevations of the country. Similarly, light rainfall accumulations were received over the western departments of Honduras. The delay of higher rainfall accumulations associated with the Primera rains during the last week has resulted in a slight strengthening of moisture deficits across parts of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Remotely sensed vegetation health indices show locally low values suggestive of poor ground conditions across parts of central and eastern Guatemala. Locally low values are also observed across parts of western Honduras as of early April.

During the middle of April, precipitation models indicate another increase in precipitation, with more widespread weekly total (5-25mm) over many parts of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. The potential for locally higher weekly accumulations (>50mm) are expected across the higher elevations of Guatemala, and over central Honduras.
