The PhD experience is a treasure in my life, with a lot of joy, passion and endurance. The PhD journey is also long and tough, luckily, I have had a lot of colleagues and friends, who always provided me support in this long journey. I am very grateful to all of the people for encouraging me and giving me company during these four years. Without them, it would not have been possible to complete this long journey.

I would first like to thank my supervisors: Ernst, Leo, Louis and Daniel. In 2013, I arrived in Netherlands. It was the first time that I was in a foreign country alone. I was amazed by everything: the houses, the people, the food and many other things. Our first housefly conference was held in the following day after I arrived. It was an unforgettable experience: we travelled to Germany, yet another new country, as soon as I arrived. I remember that I was still in jetlag and tried to stay awake during the conference. The first time I met Ernst was at that conference. He was very friendly and kind. The next year, after I moved to Göttingen, I started to get to know him better. I was very impressed by his sharp thinking and commitment for science. I learned a lot from him. He taught me to conduct experiments independently. He would spend the whole afternoon with me to analyse the data and design the experiments together. By his efforts in training me, I grew into a housefly scientist step-by-step.

Leo is the first supervisor I met when I arrived in the Netherlands. He helped me a lot to settle down here. I am impressed by his Dutch humor, even though sometimes it was difficult to understand. I will never forget the fly catching trip to Southern Italy. We met a lot of funny people and did very interesting things during the trip. The qualities I learned from him are punctuality and the passion for science. He also taught a lot of writing techniques to me. He told me that a good scientist must not only conduct experiments well, but must also be good at communicating his results. I should emphasise that his writing training paved the scientific road for me. Louis, he is more a friend to me than a supervisor. He is humorous and friendly. He has never been to China, but he knows a lot of things about China. He once said I shall slow down and think more if I want to achieve my goal, which helped me a lot in my whole PhD. I also appreciate his enormous patience with training me in writing. Without his writing advice, I would never have achieved a thesis of such a quality. Daniel is the soul of the housefly group. He is the housefly expert par excellence. Every time when I had some problems during experiments, I would always get helpful advice from him. He is very smart and knows a lot of advanced scientific techniques. He is also a huge apple fan. All the equipment he uses, even the coffee machine, is from apple. He is always the first one to arrive in the lab and the last one to leave. From him, I learnt that smartness, hard work, and a bit of luck are

the secrets to become a successful scientist.

I would like to express my gratitude to everybody in the housefly group: Akash, Svenia, Tea, Claudia, and Mark and many others. I have learnt a lot from them during our housefly conferences. I want to thank them for being such a great team.

I would like to thank my colleagues in Göttingen. We really had a nice time together during my two years there. I would like to thank Hassan, who helped to solve a lot of molecular problems that I had during my experiments. I am also very impressed by his scientific knowledge. He always had time for me whenever I had questions. He is also very patient and humorous. He told me about his travelling experience to Shuzhou and Guangzhou in China and he was impressed by the Chinese culture and the hospitality of Chinese people. I found it very enjoyable to have conversations with him. Natalia, she is my bench mate. She is a beautiful Russian girl. The first impression she gave to people is cold. However, when you get to know her better, you will find that she has a warm heart. She helped me a lot to get used to the lab life in Göttingen. Every time when I asked: “Natalia, do you know where is…?”, she always gave me an exact answer. She likes travelling and photography. From her, I learnt how to keep passion in life and how to become an independent woman. Natasha, I always call her Natalia by mistake, and I hope she already forgave me. She is very smart and kind. Oh, sometimes she is also very strict, especially when you didn’t follow the rules in the lab. From her, I know the importance to follow the rules in the lab, which keeps everybody in a safe environment. I would like to express my great gratitude to Birgit. She helped a lot to settle down my new life in Göttingen. She is such a nice lady and is always willing to help whenever I needed. I would like to thank Ingrid, Montse, Nico, Christoph, Musa and many others. They brought me a lot of fun during my stay in the lab.

I also want to thank my colleagues in Groningen, who always gave me both scientific and emotional support. Corneel was my officemate during the first year when I was in Groningen. He helps me a lot both in biology and daily life. He was very kind and he likes to laugh a lot. Whenever I received some official letters in Dutch, I always asked him to translate for me. I really appreciate the help from him. Without him, I would not get used to the new life so quick. The second person I want to thank is Maria. I liked her the moment when I first saw her. She is a very beautiful Ukrainian girl. We always went to play squash together after work and gradually we became friends. We had a lot of fun together. She is very smart, hospitable and open-minded. I always liked to share secrets with her and got advice from her. Marcela, we got to know each other in the last year in Groningen. She spent two years in England before she went back to Groningen. We always went to sports together. We have had a lot of nice evenings having dinner and playing games together. Elena, I feel so happy for her that she has

such a cute baby. I still remember our fly-catching trip in Southern Italy. She is such a nice and smart girl. Akash is a member of our housefly team. He is very good at cooking. I still remember the first dinner he cooked for me the day I arrived in Groningen. Elzemiek was my officemate during the last year when I was in Groningen. She is very helpful and kind. She is always willing to help whenever I needed. I really appreciate her help for finding a nice apartment in Groningen. I also would like to thank Martijn for translating the English summary in this thesis to Dutch. Of course, there are more people in the lab I want to thank, Anna, Emma, Rogier, Jessy, Fangying, Xuan and Yuan and many others. I would thank them for all borrels, board game evening nights … they brought so much joy to me during the two years in Groningen.

At the end, I would like to express my great gratitude to my thesis reading committee, as well as the members of the defense committee for their time and interests in reading my thesis.

I would like to thank Alex for the cover design and Anna for translating the English summary in this thesis to German. I also want to thank my family and friends! Thanks for the great support and company during my PhD life!
