I would like to express my appreciation to everyone who has supported me and my work over the course of my PhD. There are far too many people to mention individually, but there are some that I would like to thank in particular.
My PhD supervisors Henk-Jan and Jos, my sincere thanks for giving me the opportunity to carry out this research and for your helpful feedback throughout the project. My PhD co-supervisor Mark, thank you for all the moments of discussion, your advice and enthusiasm. I would also like to thank the members of my thesis committee for their time and the valuable critical appraisal of my work.
Derk Dumbar, Gert Dumbar and all other designers from Buro Derk Dumbar who were part of the pictogram development process, thank you for the playful and creative collaboration. I am also thankful to SLS Communicatiediensten for their trust and readiness to work with us. Of course, this research would not have been possible without the participants and people who helped me reach out to our target group, including pharmacies, TaalPlusschool ROC Mondriaan Den Haag, Foodbank Haaglanden and the Royal Dutch Pharmacists Association (KNMP).
I would like to thank my colleagues at SCS and KFT, and all students and co-authors who have contributed to studies, as mentioned in the chapters. Paranimf Ronella, it was great that we could undertake this adventure together – thank you for your insights and friendship. Anne and Pedro, thank you for all the motivating coffee moments.
Marion, thank you for your support to get things done, and get them done quickly.
Martina Teichert, thank you for your excellent work to continue the prospective study.
I would also like to express my gratitude to EACH: International Association for Communication in Healthcare, in particular members of the early-career committee, yEACH, and the research committee, rEACH, for providing a friendly and supportive environment to grow in health communication.
Dear family and friends, thank you for your great patience and for keeping me up-to- date on the world. My grandparents and paranimf sister, and especially my parents, thank you for your positivity and personal support in every way imaginable. aj, thank you for your endless encouragement and your ability to put things into perspective for me.
