Haiti Weather Hazards and Benefits Assessment

For

September 24 – 30, 2009

During the September 17th – 23rd observation period, another week of favorable rains fell across Hispaniola.

Precipitation amounts in excess of 40 mm were observed throughout central and southern departments of Haiti, with locally higher rainfall totals observed in the central highlands along the Haiti and Dominican Republic border. Earlier this month, favorable amounts of rain alleviated some dryness in the northwest department;

however some local areas remain below-normal. Since August, rainfall continues to remain below normal for many local areas in the Sud-Est department. In the southwestern peninsula departments, precipitation has been near-normal, resulting in favorable conditions for bean harvests this season. Precipitation forecasts suggest moderate rains over much of interior Hispaniola with totals in excess of 50 mm. Coastal areas will have rainfall totals ranging from 15 – 40 mm.
