Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
April 11 – April 17, 2013
Light rain spread along the northern coasts of Hispaniola during the past seven days.
The presence of stationary fronts to the north of Hispaniola has brought light rain along the northern coasts of the Island during the past seven days. While light to locally moderate rain fell over the Centre and Nord departments of Haiti, little to no rain was recorded over much of the interior of the Dominican Republic. Rainfall was average to below-average across Hispaniola during the past week, which should mark the beginning of the first rainy season in the region. This has resulted in the persistence of thirty-day negative anomalies, with the largest deficits exceeding 100 mm across parts of central Haiti and neighboring Dominican Republic. During the next outlook period, the prevailing easterly to southeasterly flow is expected to result in continued light to locally moderate rain across much of Haiti, the central mountainous region, and eastern Dominican Republic. The forecast continued rain should help to replenish soil moisture and benefit land preparation and sowing activities in the region.
