Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook June 15 – 21, 2017

Reduced rain observed over Hispaniola during the past week.

During early June, suppressed rain was observed throughout much of Hispaniola, except central Haiti and neighboring western Dominican Republic, where light to locally moderate rain was observed, according to satellite rainfall estimates.

Climatologically-speaking, the Island receives up to 300 mm of rainfall during June. However, since the beginning of May, infrequent and below-average rain has strengthened moisture deficits and resulted in an abnormal dryness over northern Dominican Republic, while above-average rain has prevailed over Haiti. Reports from the Dominican Republic indicated very dry soils over production areas of the north and northeast. The continuation of an erratic rainfall distribution could negatively impact cropping activities over many local areas. During the next week, an increase in rainfall is expected over Hispaniola as moderate to heavy rain is forecast over much of Haiti as well as central and southern Dominican Republic.

In contras, light rain is forecast elsewhere, including the northern and southwestern parts of the Dominican Republic.
