Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
January 31 – February 6, 2013
Light rain showers were observed across northern Hispaniola during the past week.
During the past seven days, seasonably light precipitation (<15mm) was observed across much of Hispaniola. The heaviest rains (10-20mm) were observed across the northern coastline of Dominican Republic and around the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince.
Elsewhere, little to no rain (<5mm) was observed in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. On a longer time scale, thirty-day rainfall has been near-average and seasonably light across Hispaniola. Only the region around Port-au-Prince has observed above- average rainfall. Even with light rainfall, vegetation conditions are above-average across much of Hispaniola. For the next week, scattered light to moderate rain showers (5-30mm) are forecast across southern and central Haiti and eastern Dominican Republic. Conditions are expected to remain seasonably dry into the month of February.
