Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook November 7 – November 13, 2013
Locally heavy rains provide relief to dry areas in southern Haiti.
During the past week, an increase in rainfall was observed across southern and northern Haiti and eastern Dominican Republic.
The heaviest rain (>40mm) was recorded across eastern portions of the Dominican Republic and localized areas in southwestern Haiti. The abundant rains along the southern peninsula of Haiti have helped to reduce seasonal rainfall deficits and improve ground moisture. This area has observed a poor spatial and temporal distribution of rain during the past several months, leading to abnormal dryness. However, the recent increase in rains has helped to alleviate some of the poorer conditions in the Grand’Anse department of Haiti. Dry conditions remain, though in the Sud-Est, Sud, Ouest Nord Ouest and Nord departments of Haiti. Elsewhere, light rains were observed across western Dominican Republic including over drier than average locations in northwestern Dominican Republic. For the next week, moderate to heavy rain (>30mm) is forecast for a second consecutive week across southern Haiti, helping to further reduce seasonal rainfall deficits. Elsewhere, light to moderate rain (5-30mm) is expected across the Dominican Republic and northern Haiti. The lack of rains will likely increase rainfall deficits across dry portions of northern Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
