Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook May 3 – 9, 2018

Wet weather patterns, with abundant rain, are forecast over Hispaniola during the next week.

During the past seven days, moderate to heavy rain was observed over central Haiti and western Dominican Republic, while widespread, little to light rain was recorded elsewhere. The past two consecutive weeks with heavy and above- average rain contributed to maintaining thirty-day positive rainfall anomalies over central Haiti and western Dominican Republic. However, negative rainfall anomalies, with deficits between 25-50 mm, emerged over northeastern Dominican Republic. Since December of the past year to present, much of Haiti and the central parts of the Dominican Republic received average to above-average rain, except parts of northern and southwestern Dominican Republic, where the cumulative rain accounted for less than 80 percent of the average. According to recent analysis of vegetation conditions, based on remote sensing, average to above-average conditions prevailed over Hispaniola. Though localized areas of the Island indicated degraded conditions. During the next week, rainfall forecasts suggest an increase in rainfall, with widespread moderate to heavy rain over Hispaniola. The forecast enhanced rain should, in general, help to relieve dryness and provide favorable soil moisture over many local areas of the Island. However, excess moisture also could trigger flooding or landslides over flood-prone or susceptible areas.
