Enhanced rains possible over localized areas of eastern Honduras and eastern Nicaragua during the outlook period

During early February, dry weather conditions prevailed over Central America. Suppressed rainfall was observed throughout the interior of the region.

However, light to locally moderate rains were received along the Atlantic-facing regions of Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, according to gauge estimates. Over the past thirty days, near-average rainfall was observed across much of Central America. Soil moisture was at or above-average over many areas. Since the beginning of December of the past year, below-average rainfall was registered over parts of eastern Honduras and northeastern Nicaragua, while near to above-average rainfall was recorded elsewhere. As a result, recent vegetation products from remote sensing depicted favorable and healthy conditions across Central America. However, the ongoing seasonally dry conditions may also favor forest fires over many local areas.

During the outlook period, little to no rainfall is expected along the Pacific tier of Central America. Conversely, strong prevailing easterly flow could bring light to moderate rains over localized areas such as eastern Honduras and eastern Nicaragua. For temperatures, although minimum temperature is forecast to remain near average, nighttime and early morning temperatures may still drop near freezing point, which could still adversely impact people over higher elevations.
