Climate Prediction Center’s Central America Hazards Outlook November 23 – 29, 2017

As the season is ending, reduced rain is forecast to continue over Central America during the next week.

Limited rain expected over Central America during the next week.

During the past week, Central America experienced another week of suppressed rain, particularly the northern portions of the sub-region. Little to no rainfall was observed over Guatemala, El Salvador, much of Honduras, and north-central Nicaragua. Light to locally moderate rain fell along northern Honduras and northeastern Nicaragua, while widespread and heavy rain was recorded along the Gulf of Honduras and across the Southern Caribbean. Since the August-November season is coming to an end, this past week’s limited rainfall total was not atypical during this time of the year. The seven-day rainfall anomalies showed near-average to above-average rain throughout the region. Over the past thirty days, many areas of Central America received average to above-average rain, except eastern Guatemala, southern Honduras, and along the Nicaragua- Honduras border, where small to moderate moisture deficits persisted. An analysis of recent vegetation health index indicated, overall, positive conditions, which could be attributed to a favorable second season rainfall performance over Central America.

During the next outlook period, as the August-November rainfall season is coming to an end, rainfall forecasts indicate a continuation of the drier weather pattern over Central America. Little to no rainfall is expected over the interior of the sub-region. However, moderate to heavy rain is possible over the Southern Caribbean. For temperature, while some northerly components of the winds could bring cold air mass onto northern Central America, model forecast indicates that minimum temperature should remain above-freezing over the higher terrains.
