CHARACI'ERIZATION IN MANGOMO AND LEHUDU BY MMILENG, M. T. : AN INVESTIGATIVE

'Ihe main objective of this study is to investigate in detail the theory of characterization
andto analyse critically the ways in which characters are presented with particular reference to Mangomo
andI.ehudu. This study further compares
a'1dcontrasts the development
andgrowth of characters in these two novels.
'Ihe study focuses specifically on providing a comprehensive background on characterization. It is anticipated that this will help clear the
confusion around characters as they feature in novels as opposed to real life situations.
'Iheoretical aspects of characterization shed new light on these novels and it was explained why this theory could
beused with success in analysing characterization in Setswana novels.
Chapter one of this study gives a brief introduction, problems, aims as well as the methodology employed in the study.
'Ihe author's biography is fully given in chapter two in order to introduce
him to the readers. 'Ihe biography given is of utmost importance in the

sense that the two novels Uhder discussion were largely influenced by the author
1s background which reveals his biography to a certain extend.
Chapter three gives a detailed scientific theory of characterization as well as provides the framework for a satisfactory character depiction.
The theories of investigative - comparison are also discussed to evaluate character growth
anddevelopment in Mangomo
andI.ehudu.
Chapters four
andfive present critical examinations of characterization in Mangomo
andI.ehudu respectively. Particular attention is given to how the actions
anddeeds of the main character ( s)
andbackground characters irnpact on characterization. These characters are evaluated individually to reveal the direct as well as the indirect presentations.
A comparison approach is used in the characterization of the two novels.
The differences
andsimilarities are investigated to establish whether progressive growth in characterization could
bediscerned especially because both novels are vrritten by the same author.
The findings of this study reveal that the literary theory
ingeneral
could
besuccessfully applied in Setswana novels. Points of similarities
anddifferences were discernable
inMmileng
1s characterization in the two
novels under focus. It also
becameobvious that naming among the Batswana
differs from that of the English
andAfrikaans people.

'Ihe author tended ·to alter his style of presenting characters in the two novels as characterization in Mangomo
andLehudu differs in some respect.
In conclusion, this study has shown that characterization in Manqomo
andLehudu lends itself to literary theory in general. It
becameobvious that the characters in the two novels could
besubjected to direct
andindirect presentation. 'Ihe findings further revealed that the author succeeded to present
andcreate living characters by using words. In conclusion
therefore, the author's character depiction is highly cormnendable.

Die hoof doelwit van hierdie studie is om die teorie van karakterisering in besonderhede te ondersoek en om die wyses waarop die karakters
voorgestel word krities te analiseer met spesifieke verwysing na Mangomo en Lehudu. Verder vergelyk en kontrasteer hierdie studie die ontwH::keling en groei van karakters in hierdie twee romans.
Die studie fokus ook spesifiek daarop om
1n omvattende agtergrond van karakterisering te verskaf. Dit word in die vooruitsig gestel dat
sondanige navorsing sal bydra om die fiktiwiteit van romankarakters toe te lig.
Teoretiese aspekte van karakterisering het veel · bygedra tot
1n beter verstaan van die bestudeerde romans en daar is uitgewys waarom hierdie toerie met suskes gebruik kan word in die analise van karakterisering in ander Setswana-romans.
Hoofstuk een van hierdie studie bevat
1n beknopte inleiding,
probleernstellings, doelwitte asook die metodologie van die studie.

Die biografie van die skrywer word volledig in. hoofstuk. twee aangebied om hom sodoende aan die lesers bekend te stel. Die biografie is van die grootste belang in die sin dat die twee romans onder bespreking grootliks beinvloed is deur die skrywer se agtergrond, en daarbenewens ook fasette van sy biogrc3£iese
bestaandokumenteer.
In hoofstuk. drie word 'n wetenskaplike teorie·· oor karakterisering gebied.
Dit verskaf die raamwerk vir 'n bevredigende karakteruitbeelding.
Die teorie van ondersoekende vergel yking word ook bespreek om die karakters se groei en ontwikkeling in Manqomo en Iehudu te evalueer.
Hoofstuk. vier doen verslag van die kritiese ondersoek van karakterisering
in Mangomo; dieselfde ten opsigte van I.ehudu kom in hoofstuk. vyfaan
bod.Besondere aandag word gegee aan hoe die handeling. en dade van die
hoofkarakters en newekarakters
impakhet op die karakterisering. Hierdie karakters word indi vidueel geevalueer om die direkte sowel as die
indirekte voorstellings uit te wys.
'n Vergelykende benadering word gebruik
in die karakterisering van dietwee romans. Die verskille en die ooreenkomste word ondersoek om vas te
stel of 'n progressiewe groei
in karakterisering waargeneem kan word,veral om::iat beide romans van een skrywer is.

Die bevindinge van hierdie studie onthul dat die liter&-e teorie ir1 die algemeen suksesvol aangewend
kanword vir Setswana romans. Punte van ooreenkorns en verskille was opmerklik in Mmileng se karakterisering in die twee romans onder bespreking. Dit het ook duidelik geword dat naarrgewing onder die Batswana verskil van die van Engelse en Afrikaanse mense.
Die skrywer was geneig om sy styl van aanbieding van karakters in die twee romans te verander, aangesien karakterisering in Mangomo en I.ehudu in sekere opsigte verskil.
Te.n slotte het hierdie studie getoon dat karakterisering in Manqomo en I.ehudu meetbaar is aan bestaande standaarde. Dit het duidelik geblyk dat die karakters
in die twee romans op 'n ilnplisiete en eksplisiete wysegekarakteriseer word. Die bevindinge het verder uitgewys dat die skrywer geslaag het om lewende karakters voor te stel en te skep deur die gebruik van taal. Derhalwe kan gekonstuteer word dat die skywer se
karakteruitbeelding van hoogstaande gehal te is.
