Propositions

To accompany the thesis: ‘The future of seagrass ecosystem services in a changing world’ by Rebecca James

1. The loss of native coastal ecosystems exacerbates the threats of climate change, making adaptation to future conditions more difficult (Chapter 5 & 6).

2. Protecting coastal ecosystems requires partnership between scientists, land managers and most critically, the local community (Chapter 4).

3. Interdisciplinary collaboration is the most efficient way to push the boundaries of science. 4. A combination of flexibility and robustness is an effective life strategy, both for seagrasses and people.

5. Society is made poorer when its connection to nature is weakened. 6. A few people’s desire for riches is costing us the earth.
