ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
___________________________________________________________________________
There are so many people I must thank for the completion of this PhD dissertation. First and foremost, I would like to thank my promoters Claes de Vreese and Peter Neijens as well as my co-promoter Andreas Schuck. I am grateful for your invaluable guidance throughout the years. Claes and Peter, thank you for accepting my application to ASCoR and trusting my abilities to develop this PhD project. Andreas, besides the technical guidance, I must also thank you for your motivational pep-talks.
I am also appreciative towards Universiti Putra Malaysia for giving me the opportunity to study abroad in the first place. Thank you also to Sungeun Chung, my MA thesis supervisor who provided me guidance throughout the PhD application process. Without your help, I would not have made it to Amsterdam.
Throughout my four years at ASCoR, I have had the privilege of working in a supportive and dynamic environment. I am grateful for the financial support which has allowed me to travel extensively for data collection as well as for international conferences. Some of these places were admittedly on my bucket list. Thanks to ASCoR, I can say that I have made it to all continents in the world (excluding Antarctica of course).
I would like to express my gratitude to Rens Vliegenthart, Hajo Boomgaarden, Sophie Lecheler, Andreas Schuck and all PhD club members for not only your feedback on my articles, but also for teaching me so many new things in relation to political communication. Thank you also Jeroen de Kloet for letting me be a part of the Trans-Asia reading group. The experience has made me aware of the different ways of looking at research and culture.
Many thanks to my officemates Chow Yiu Fai, Diana Lucio, Mario Keer, Damian Trilling, Reza Kartosen, Bjorn Burscher, Miruna Doicaru, Maud Adriaansen, Matthijs Elenbaas, and Malte Hinrichsen. You have done a wonderful job at keeping the working environment lively yet productive. Thanks also to Suchi Joshi and Ewa Maslowska for the office visits and chit chats over coffee. It was always nice to be able to confide on the trials of life in a foreign land with you.
There are also people from the “real world” who mustn’t go unmentioned. Diana Welch, Ana Laura Inclan, and Michael Muller, thank you for your encouragement even

before I applied to the PhD program. I could also not imagine life without the support of my girl friends back home (all 14 of them!).
My paranymphs Susanne Baumgartner and Mario Keer have been wonderful friends. Susanne, we clicked since the first time we met. You have been there for me throughout the good times and the bad. I assure you that moving to distant places will not prevent us from staying close friends. Mario, I will always remember you as the first person in Amsterdam that I got in contact with. It started with me writing e-mails to you inquiring about ASCoR. Who knew that we would end up as office mates, friends and later each other’s paranymphs.
Another person who has significantly contributed towards enriching my living abroad experience as well as to my PhD dissertation is Christian Baden. I have learnt a great deal from you and with you. Thank you very much.
Last but not least, I would like to thank members of my family. Rani and Faz, it was comforting to know that you guys were always nearby. I will miss your visits to my little Amsterdam apartment. Mummy and Papa, I will forever be indebted to you. I still remember the days when I used to tell you that I will be a flight attendant when I grow up. And you would tell me to study hard to get what I want. As we can see, I’m all grown up, but I’m not a flight attendant. I guess things don’t always go as planned. You were always there for me no matter what decisions I made in life. Thank you for your unconditional love and support. I love you very much and so I dedicate this dissertation to you.
