Chapter 9. Acknowledgements
During the past years, I have had the priviledge to meet, interact and work with many extraordinary people. First and foremost I have to thank Cyriel for trusting me with this challenging project. I can genuinely say that have learned more from you than from anyone else. Another person whose role was instrumental (no pun intended) during my PhD was Francesco — thanks for sharing all your practical and theoretical knowledge with me and others involved in the mouse recordings.
I have been incredibly lucky to have such motivated, reliable and enthusiastic students as Sabine, Paul & Frank. You all did a lot of hard work and I really enjoyed working with you. Pieter, Marijn, Henrique, Eunjeong & Willem — my fellow PhD students who have already left the lab — I wish you all the best with your current projects. I am sure that also sehr geehrte Prof. Dr. Kalenscher will be very successful in his new position.
The others who joined the lab after me – Jeroen, Tara, Zbiegniew, Gerben & Jorrit: good luck in finishing in your PhDs! Martin hardly needs luck taken how he has caught me up — I would, however, like to thank you for sharing your expertise. Laura, Jadin, Jan, Wim, Sander, Silviu, Luc, Conrado, Catalin, Frans, Gerrit and all the other people who worked at the Cognitive & Systems Neuroscience group, SILS CNS and the workshop — thanks not only for your help, but also making the lab a very friendly environment to work in. I will certainly remember the gezellige evenings at the Windmill and Ponteneur.
Carien has had a multi-faceted role first as my fellow PhD student and officemate and now as a committee member. I would like to thank her and Wytse, Chris, Sabine and Merel for allocating time for reviewing this thesis despite your time constraints. Thanks particularly to Dietmar Kuhl for not only for serving as a committee member, but also for collaborating with us; and Claudia who handled many of the practical aspects of the Arc/Arg3.1 collaboration — it was very nice to meet you and share all the interesting details about the Arc/Arg3.1 mice! Thanks also to Guus for discussing how to get through the final steps of writing my dissertation.
Tomi, Sari, Segge, Anna, Aino, Juuso, Ruusu, Marko, Ivan and all the others from the Animal Physiology Department and Neuroscience Center Helsinki: I had an amazing time doing my MSc with you. Anders and Zoltán — I don’t think I would have dared to pursue a PhD abroad if I had

not shared the Kristineberg magic with you! Petteri and Yoe, my fellow Finnish neuromancers in exile, have been a great source of peer-support through these years.
I would like to thank all my friends in Finland, who have faithfully kept in touch with all these years. You are too many to mention, but I feel deep gratefulness every time I sit in Willi Väinö, Ruttopuisto, mitänäitänyton, and find you there. I would also like to thank my ‘adoptive family’ in the Netherlands: Marianne, Robert, Sanderijn, Simone, Peter and Marjon — thanks for making me feel so welcome! Nick — you are always welcome to London! Thanks also to Tim and everyone else at the BMC Series and Heather & the team at the Nature Reviews Neurology as well as Maaret, Marja and Matt for making London feel like home.
Most of all, I would like to thank Jasper for being my companion for all these years. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to make this journey with you.
