136 Five years is a long time. As I look back on my life, I would say that this period is the most important and happiest time until now. Here, I want to express my sincere gratitude and best wishes to people who made my life better in Groningen.

My deepest appreciation and thankfulness goes first to my main supervisor, Prof. Anna K. H. Hirsch. I thank her for offering me the opportunity to do my doctoral research in such a young and great group, and for her patient and generous guidance, encouragement and support. Anna, in my eyes, you are more than just my supervisor that helped me with research. You are also my sincere friend, and I appreciate your kind tolerance, friendly advice, moral support and encouragement a lot, especially when I was experiencing difficult times in the last two years.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Adriaan Minnaard. Adri, I am very much appreciated that you offered me the opportunity to work in your group. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge and professional experience on organic synthesis and purification during subgroups all these years.

My sincere thanks go to Dr. Martin Witte. Martin, thank you very much for all your help on my projects. I have benefited a lot from your great experience and professional suggestions on chemistry.

I express my acknowledgement to the members of the Assessment Committee, Prof. K. Loos, Prof. N. Katsonis and Prof. S. Otto for their priceless suggestions on my thesis.

I would like to thank Monique and Theodora for technical support. I also want to thank my students Cem and Mattia for their hard work and great contributions to the project.

I am thankful to all my collaborators, Andreas, Eric, Hans, Harm, Herman, Jan Willem, Jean-Marie, Marc, Qing, Sebastian, Sophie, Tjitske and Wesley. Without all of their kind help and great contributions, this thesis would not have reached completion.

Shuo and Jingyi, you help me a lot when I first came to Groningen. Without your kind help, I would not have been able to start my life in Groningen so easily. Gongbao, Zhongtao and Yange, I really enjoyed the time we spent together. We talked freely in Chinese about work, life and future plans. You gave me a lot supports and happiness during my stay in Groningen.

Yagiz, I really appreciate your listening to my story, sharing your feelings and encouraging me continuously. We talked about chemistry, publications, news and life. That is a beautiful memory to me. My dear friend, I wish you great success in both career and life in the future. Alwin, I was pleased to work together with you in my last

137 year in the lab. Thanks for the nice Dutch translation of the summary of this thesis. I wish you all the best in your future career.

Rui, you are a good cooker. And your husband is the best chef. He is able to make food entertainment and passion and good at cooking both Chinese and Spanish food. It was the happiest time for my stomach when he came to Groningen. My dear friend, I wish you a happy life with your husband in the future.

Niek, how is your Chinese now? I have to admit that your Chinese is better than my Dutch. Without your help, I could not learn the kinetic NMR techniques so fast. And you gave so much useful advice on sugar purification. More importantly, you made my life happier in the lab. Jonas (L), I am very impressed by your kindness. And I really enjoyed working and talking with you. Jeffery, not so many guys know what is “Kadafi”. You gave me a lot of fun in the lab. Good luck with your life and career in US. Bea, we stayed in the same office for four years. Thanks for inviting me to your family Christmas dinner during my trip to Madrid. That was the happiest Christmas for me. Peter, you are a good chemist and lab supervisor. You helped a lot in the lab. I have learned many good habits from you.

I would also like to thank all the group members, Blijke, Felix, Tiziana, Kiran, Hylke, Jelle, Jonas (A), Nick, Patrick, Steven, Vasu, Mannathan, Zuzanna, Paul, Danny, Ruben, Chris, Ashmir, Nabil, Leticia, Ramon, Di, Ji, as well as people from other groups: Claudia, Wiktor, Michael, Kaja, Wim, Maria, Giulia, Yigit, Meniz, Agnieszka, for all your help and supports.

Finally, I want to thank the Chinese community, Gang, Xuan, Jinfeng, Depeng, Siqin, Huayuan, Lei, Liang, Nana, Qian, Xiaoyan&Lili, Qing&Zhuojun, Jiajia, Kai&Juanjuan, Lifei&Qinhong, Jun&Pei, Tiancai, Wei, Chao, Qiuyan, for all their supports in Groningen.

Besides chemistry, I have learned a lot from my life experience in the Netherlands, by travelling around Europe and reading, which lead to dramatic changes of my attitude and perspective to my life, my homeland and the world. I believe what Benedetto Croce said, “All history is contemporary history.” In the past century, there was never a human brain evolution, but a human knowledge revolution. As knowledge is the basement of attitude, the more knowledge people obtain, the more reasonably people will treat the world, which I also choose to believe.
