Acknowledgments
First and foremost I would like to thank Marc van der Maarel. Thanks for inviting me to work on this interesting topic. It was a great coincidence that we met at the conference in Helsinki while you where looking for a PhD candidate and I was thinking about my academic future. I am thankful for your patience and optimism, your input and support. You were always open to try out new ways to improve our work and venture with me into new topics.
Secondly, I would like to express my gratitude to Edita Jurak. I was halfway through my PhD when she joined the group but her guidance and daily super-vision has been invaluable. She introduced me to new analytical methods and techniques and always took the time to discuss the procedures in detail, analyze all results and talk about the all the things surrounding the PhD. Thank you for answering all my questions and bringing order and structure to the chaos.
Further, I would like to thank Alle van Wijk for all the lab-related discussions and for being my constant lunch companion, even when it was just the two of us. I really enjoyed having all those breaks and talks with you.
My grateful thanks go to Hilda for joining forces for Chapter 5. All the discus-sions we had greatly helped by improving the obtained data and interpreta-tion. Thank you also very much for translating the summary as my Dutch was not sufficient.
I am grateful to Sofi for getting me started with the experiments and letting me be her shadow for my first two weeks in the lab. It greatly accelerated my understanding of the techniques and methods used in this research.
I further thank the staff from AVEBE, especially Hans Leemhuis for the valu-able input and discussions.
I also thank former and present permanent staff Jan, Inge, Johanna and Yvonne for all their kind help.
A shout out to hank you to Lisanne, Hilda and Salvador for bringing the lab to the next level by extending the available knowledge, methods and equipment needed for analytical experiments. I wish all of you good luck with finishing your thesis.
Acknowledgments Many thanks go the former and present members of the BE and PPBBE groups for the friendly atmosphere, all the talks, lunch and coffee breaks and generally creating a nice workspace: Adel, Bob, Bert, Fean, Gang, Gert-Jan, Hilda, Ima, Janneke, Jing, Lisanne, Marta, Martin, Salvador, Selvaraj, Spiros, Xuewen, Yanfei, Vivi, Yu, …
Further, I would like to thank my friends, both back in Austria and the interna-tionals I have met over the years. Thank you for all the moments we shared together and for always lifting my spirits and getting my mind off of things. Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my three families, scat-tered all around the globe. You differ so much in culture, background and personality that there was always someone I could ask for advice and support. Thank you for always believing in me and giving me the confidence I needed. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank my partner Thomas. For everything.
