I honestly still cannot believe that four years of my PhD journey has come to an end. Time flies so fast when we enjoy it, and it is also true in my case. Of course, it goes without saying that the completion of this thesis would not have been possible without people who have supported me and shared this journey with me through these years. First and foremost, I would like to thank my promotor and co-promotor Anna and Inge. Anna, it is difficult to express how lucky I feel to have you as my supervisor already since I was still a master student. You have shown the best quality of a person who could manage and support your students with full of energy, patience and understanding. You have taught me a lot of things, especially to keep optimistic and to believe that things will eventually work out even when the situation is unlikely. Thank you for believing in me since day one and for everything else that you have done to me until now. Inge, this PhD project would not have been realized without your massive supports. Thank you for all your valuable ideas, inputs, and comments that you gave me already back to when we wrote the PhD proposal and during these four years. I really appreciate your time and effort you spent in reading and reviewing this thesis. It has been a great pleasure to work with you.

I would also like to thank Prof. Klaas Poelstra, Prof. Barbro Melgert, Dr. Inge de Graaf, and

Dr. Leonie Beljaars for their valuable questions and discussions during research meetings.

Special thanks also for the reading committee, Prof. Erik Frijlink, Prof. Ingrid Molema, and

Prof. Wolfgang Parak, for their time and willingness to read and review this thesis.

Additionally for Ingrid, and together with Henk Moorlag, I would also like to thank you both for your help and fruitful discussion on endothelial cells.

Additionally, I would like to thank Dr. Hjalmar Permentier, Margot Jeronimus-Stratingh, and

Marcel de Vries for helping me with LC-MS sample preparation and analysis, and Edwin de Jong for helping me with hCMEC/D3 cell culture.

Next, I would like to thank the whole PTT (which is now called NDT) group for all their supports during the last four years and for making my time in the lab very memorable: Catharina,

Eduard, Marina, Gillian, Valentina, Keni, Harita, Hector, Daphne, Roberta, Natasha, Sarah, Ilse, Raquel, Laura, Shanshan, Habibie, Gwenda, Viktoriia, Anienke, Fransien, Natalia, Adhy,

249 Amirah, and Marcel. Catharina, it was great to have you as my technician. Thank you for

helping me culturing cells, teaching me new techniques, and keeping the lab organized. The same also goes to you Eduard, thank you for all your great tips in the lab that make complicated things get simpler and easier, also for your help in fixing computers and machine-related problems. Ilse, although you joined our lab quite recently, you have been very helpful and a great company in the lab. Also because of you now I know that dairy-free is actually not good for lactose intolerant. Gillian, without you our department won’t be alive. You bring so much joys to all of us, and you know that you are always “a young nestling” regardless your age.

Valentina, probably you have known already that all this PhD journey started when you said

yes to Anna when she asked you for a master student. I am so grateful to have you as my both supervisor and colleague. Roberta, I remember you just started your PhD when I first joined the lab for my master internship, already by then you were already full of enthusiasm. Thank you for all the joys and spirit that you showed every day. Daphne, you are such a colleague that everybody would dream to have. You always show so much dedication to your work and at the same time help and care your colleagues, and we know that we can always count on you. Also special thanks for your help with the translation of my thesis summary into Dutch.

Natasha, I am so grateful that you joined our lab and taught me a lot to build up my soft skills.

Thank you for believing me in taking part in CRS Benelux and France Local Chapter and for your help in so many things. I always look up to you especially for your enthusiasm and confidence in pursuing your goal; you show that everything is possible.

Now I would like to thank my office mates for all the good time we shared together. Hector my first office mate, there is no word to describe how amazing it is that you share your Netflix account with me for free for basically my entire PhD, I hope you are aware of that. Thank you for that and more importantly for being a great colleague. We still have to play Call of Duty together by the way. Keni, in the past year being your office mate was a lot of fun and joy. Thank you for all the Ping-Pong sessions, also with Hector, and for ordering me super delicious Chinese food from time to time. The same goes to you Harita, thank you for a being super chill office mate. I enjoyed a lot all the chats we had. Also thanks for always helping me with my horible English.

I could not be here ending my PhD without the supports of all my friends outside work, my second family: Simon, Rodrigo, Pamela, Marc, Lily, Joost, Daniel, Irene, Fatemeh, Johanna,

Rous, Guadalupe, Eigirdas, Aurora, Dan, and Tim. Dear Simon, Rodrigo, and Pam, no words

can express how grateful I am to know 3 of you. You all were there since pretty much the beginning of my journey in Groningen, and it is still counting. Thank you for all the amazing time and helping me having such a joyful social life. Additionally for Simon and Pam, thank you for being my paranymphs, I really could not ask for more.

Finally, I would like to thank my family for their support, especially for my parents. Dear mom and dad, thank you for everything and for allowing me pursuing my dreams even when it costs us huge distance. Even though we don’t see each other often, I know you always have my back. I love you both lots and lots.
