ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fandi Sutanto was born in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, on April 28th, 1988. He obtained his Pharmacist degree in 2011 from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). He performed his bachelor research under the supervision of Dr. rer.nat. Rahmana Emran Kartasasmita. Two years later, he finished his Master’s degree, majoring in Pharmacochemistry, in the same university. The focus of his research was the development of anticancer candidate, under the supervision of (late) Dr. Amir Musadad and Prof. Dr. Daryono Hadi. He then worked as a scientist in the analytical department at Dexa Laboratories of Biomolecular Sciences, a pharmaceutical industry in Indonesia. In December 2015, he obtained a scholarship to continue his study. In April 2016, he quit his job and moved to Groningen, The Netherlands, to pursue doctoral studies. He joined the Drug Design group in the University of Groningen, under the guidance of Prof. Alexander Dömling. His PhD research focuses on the development of novel covalent inhibitors utilizing the multicomponent reactions.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Finally, the journey of my PhD in the Netherlands is reaching its end. It was an amazing experience both scientifically and personally. Since most of the scientific parts are described in the previous chapters, in this part I would like to express the personal parts.

Obviously, first of all I am truly grateful to my supervisor Prof. Alexander Dömling for the opportunity to join the Drug Design group as a PhD candidate. I remember the first time we had a skype meeting where I was not really confident with the result, yet in less than 5 minutes after the meeting ended, I received an e-mail from you stating that I am suitable to join your group. You are one of the most easy-going and full-of-smile supervisor I ever had. You showed a lot of care, you always came to me and ask if I have problems on the chemistry and lab works. You were there whenever I had questions and gladly answered the questions and providing guidance. Thank you for trusting me to be the “covalent guy”, I learned a lot from you. Thank you for everything.

I would also like to thank Prof. Tad Holak and Prof. Matthew Groves as my co-promotor and co-supervisor for the collaborations.

Next, I would like to thank the members of the reading committee: Prof. Romano Orru, Prof. Philip Elsinga, and Prof. Ryan Chiechi for their time and effort to evaluate and approve the thesis.

Another important person in the group, Jolanda, many thanks for everything. Administrative issues, stationeries, conferences, package deliveries, you name it, she helps you.

I thank our former lab manager Dr. André Boltjes for his dedication in maintaining the lab. He always encouraged us to tell him when something bad happened, so he can fix it, instead of hiding it. Although unfortunately, in most cases, the cause of these bad things are “ghosts”.

Robin, the only lab manager we currently have. I thank you very much for translating the summary of my thesis in Dutch. Also, thank you in assisting us whenever there are problems with instruments, you even came in the weekend to fix these issues.

I would like to express my gratitude to Qian and Jingyao. You two came exactly after me for your PhD, and I would say you two are the closest friends I have in the Netherlands. Firstly, Qian, you are very enthusiast and hard-working. Secondly, Jingyao, you are very kind and helpful. To both of you, you two are great cooks. I cannot thank you enough for your willingness to become my paranymphs during this pandemic.

Markella, one of the best PhD students I have ever met. Thank you for encouraging me and keeping me positive. I had times when I was being pessimistic, and you were the one I always talked to. I had great times together with you, and having pizza together in the weekend in the coffee room was one of them. Also, thank you for introducing Greek food to me, I love them.

To Roberto, thank you for the discussions we had, and for the tiramisu. You are a good combination of Italian and German; work like Germans and cook like Italians. Ruixue, Bidong, Li, and Zefeng; it was a pleasure knowing you all. I really enjoyed the time during our conference in Athens together with Jingyao. I also enjoyed the dinner we sometimes had together. Is every Chinese a good cook? Because to me, it seems like that is the case.

I would also like to thank the current members of the lab: Xin, Qiang, Mojgan, Marta W, Patil, and Shabnam for the discussions and collaborations. To the members of the biology lab: Atilio, Kai, Wenjia, Juliana, Ran, Rick. Thank you for the collaborations and helping me to test my covalent libraries. To the former members of the group: Yuanze, Dinos, Tryfonas, Natalia, Edwin, Vish, Chary, Angelina, Maryam, Eman, Ajay; it was really a pleasure meeting you all. To Santosh, my friend, thank you for our collaboration, you guided me to the light when I was stuck in the dark.

That’s all there is to the member of the group. Now I will start with the (international) students that came to experience our lab. Arianna, my dear friend, there are many stories I have with you. The time when Qian, Santosh, and I were visiting you in Milan and the four of us went for a trip together to Pisa and Porto Venere was one of my favorite. I really enjoyed the time we spent together. I will be waiting for you to visit Indonesia.

I would like to thank my former students Eric, Karin, Bryan, Oscar, Ramta. It was a pleasure working with you all. The last but not least, Silvia, although it was just a short time, you were a great student. To the other students: Sara, Francesca, Marta F, Antonio, Vincenzo, Daniele, Paola, Max, Kees, Harmen, Elmar, Michel, Perry, Kumchok, Gita, Frans, Robert, Hylke, Jan #1, Jan #2, Oliver, Miska, Tatiana, Martin, Khaled, Salomäo, Renan, many thanks for making the lab feel much more lively, it was a great pleasure knowing you all.

To my Indonesian friends: Alfian, Amaq, Ayha, Azis, Azka, Audrey, Bhimo, Cancan, Deka, Dhila, Dina, Dion, Era, Frans, Gerry, Gytha, Hendy, Ika, Irene, Ivan, Jessie (thank you for the delicious foods), Joko, Laras, Leci, Livia, May, Monik, Rafi, Rani, Reni, Sarah, Thiya, Wandy, Yovi, Zerry, and many many more I cannot write every single one of you. Thank you for all the fun we had together, enjoying bukber, Indonesian Day, Groenscup, and so much more.

Finally, I would like to thank my beloved family. To my ex-girlfriend (now my wife), I Irawati, thank you for surviving our long distance relationship, and thank you for accompanying me during the last year of my stay in the Netherlands without complaining except for the cold weather.
