First, I want to thank my supervisor, mentor and boss, Marco. Thank you so much for guiding me through my PhD life, which makes it easy and fruitful. You are always being nice, caring and open-minded and your exploration to the spirit of multi-culture makes our lab the most international group in the Netherlands. Thank you for your trust in me by recruiting me from the other side of the planet, which completely changed my life into a European style. I really enjoyed working with you, and sometimes I miss those old days when you came to my desk almost every day and we could have a daily brief talk. I am so proud and happy to grow together with the lab and you, and I believe that we will always be able to excel ourselves again and again.
Simone, our dear lab manager and my Dutch life consultant, I really learn a lot from you not
only for laboratory techniques but also in daily life. Thijmen, my dear buddy and my mentor for Dutch life. I cannot remember how many times you helped me to solve my puzzles in daily life. Thank you for picking us up from the airport, discarding the massive garbage in my basement, fixing my light switch and so on. I really appreciate our friendship. Ale, Hola, my PhD twin! Thank you so much for being friend with my wife, which makes her more adapted to the life here. I wish to meet you again soon. Cor, my dear promoter. Thank you very much for supporting and encouraging me through the
whole PhD, especially the final phase to make everything so smooth. Christine, thank you for helping me so many times with my experimental issues, you are always one of the first persons that came into my mind to ask for help when I face some experimental problems. Britt, Hidde and Josi, thank you all for always helping me with the reagents and cell lines. Gertrud, Renee and Wytse, thank you all so much for your technical support and help. Bertien, thank you so much for helping me with the mouse blood experiments. After my moving, now I live closer to you! Haohao, my dear son and the most important person to your mom and me in the world. Even
though I still advise the readers of this thesis not to have kids during their PhD studies, you are the greatest gift I ever received in my life. Whenever I think about you, happiness floods into my heart. You are so beautiful and smart, much more than I could ever imagine a kid could be. You are always so energetic, and you are always so happy. I am learning how to be a perfect father, and you teach me a lot. I really do not know how to express my love to you even though I already kissed you a million times. Since you were born, nothing is more important than your health, safety and happiness to me, and I will protect that with my life.
Yuan, my dear wife and my love forever. When I first met you in Hong Kong, I already knew
that this beautiful and brilliant girl would be my wife one day. Thank you so much for loving me, marrying me and giving me a son. You had a decent life in Wuhan with a nice career and all the families around, but you gave up everything to come to the Netherlands with me and almost became a housewife. But you are always brilliant and dedicated enough to learn a new language, adapt into a new culture and develop a new career. After three years, you became a dentist in the Netherlands, which made me so proud but also surprised. Yes, that is who you are! You never hesitated to pursue your love, your career and your happiness. You are such a strong woman, but I will spend my entire life to protect you and love you.
Last but not least, I want to thank my parents and parents-in-law. Thank you all so much for giving birth to us, so that Yuan and I can make a family and we can have beloved Haohao. Thank you all so much for your great effort in providing us the best education you could, so

that we were able to move around the world to find the most suitable place to settle. Thank you all so much for your selfless financial support, so that we could live a decent life and be focused on our work and Haohao without worrying too much about the living expenses in expensive countries. I really hope that you all can live healthy and happy to enjoy the retired life. Please always remember that I will be there whenever you need me. I love you all!
