Hanaa was born in Kuwait on December 4th 1971, where she grew up and attended primary and prep schools until 1986. Then she moved with her family to Aswan, Egypt where she finished secondary school there. She did a Bachelor Degree of Science in Biology (Botany) at Assuit University, Aswan branch at Aswan and she had graduated with honours in May 1994. Hanaa studied biological sciences initially with keen interest on subjects such as anatomy, cell biology, genetics, microbiology and virology but later on she became more interested in studies of ecology, ecosystems and the environment. After finished her first degree in 1994, she accepted a job as a temporary researcher at the Unit of Environmental Studies and Development (UESD), Assiut-South Valley University, Aswan branch, where she performed her Master in “Ecology of Medicinal plants”. The program has exposed her with lots of fieldworks in semi-arid areas, which triggered her interest in conservation studies, sustainable development and the social and political aspects of science. During that time she participated in several activities of UESD as conferences, workshops...etc. and also she served as an organizer for them, where she worked with several international and national organizations, institutes and NGOs.

After obtaining her Master Degree, she joined the Education Collage for Girls in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2000 as a lecturer in biology department. She also participated in numerous activities of the department. Realizing of her own potential, Hanaa decided to quit her job in 2004 and continued her study at PhD-level.

Hanaa looked forward to study abroad, so she started the process of searching potential supervisor in a number of international respected universities. Finally Dr. Swart from Groningen University accepted her PhD proposal. Hanaa found about the Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) on the internet with the help of Dr. H. Yacoub and she applied for it with the help of Dr. Swart, she was accepted. Beginning from March 2012, Hanaa started her PhD research on “Desert Related Traditional Knowledge, Policies and Management in Wadi Allaqi, South Eastern Desert, Egypt” at the Science and Society Group (SSG), which is part of the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute (ESRIG) of the Groningen University, the Netherlands, under the supervision of Dr. J.A.A.
