I am sitting in a café in Tain, a town in the North of Scotland. For the past weeks I have been working in the beautiful Scottish highlands on a transect study in blue tits as part of a three year postdoc at the University of Edinburgh. I am counting my blessings to have started such a dream job before I am defending my thesis. I had not been doing field work for two field seasons due to the writing of my thesis, but what a beautiful thing it is to be out in the field monitoring the birds and the trees, to watch spring come into bloom. I have missed this.
I am grateful to have done my PhD in such a stimulating and wonderful environment at the Animal Ecology group in Groningen, and later Conservation Ecology. At the start of my PhD not much was defined about my project, which was challenging and suitable for me at the same time. It has been a great learning experience to work at one of the top ecological/evolutionary/ornithological research institutes in the world.
First, I want to thank Christiaan, my day to day supervisor. Wat een ongelofelijk voorrecht ik voelde toen ik werd uitgekozen voor deze positie. Een beetje intimiderend vond ik het ook wel gezien je publicatielijst, maar de intimidatie verdween in de loop van de tijd en maakte plaats voor een aangename samenwerking. Ik bewonder je vakkennis, je toewij-ding voor het veld, je allergie voor hiërarchie (het gaat om het argument!) en de manier waarop je life history en ecologie verbindt met urgente vraagstukken. Bedankt dat je me de vrijheid hebt gegeven om mijn eigen pad te kiezen. Je hebt met veel toewijding en enthousiasme geholpen aan de ontwikkeling van de vragen en uitwerking van dit proef-schrift. Het was fijn dat de deur altijd open stond om te praten over de inhoud van de stukken en de ecologie.
I would like to thank Joost Tinbergen. Uiteindelijk hebben we minder samengewerkt dan ik vantevoren had ingeschat, maar het is gaandeweg zo gegroeid. In de eindfase, toen je eigenlijk iets te overhaast mijn proefschrift moest lezen (waarvoor excuses), merkte ik dat jouw invalshoek een gemis is geweest in de schrijffase. Je waardering voor precieze formulering van een vraag en een juiste uitwerking (geen causaliteit claimen wanneer dat niet gegrond is) zijn prettig in een tijdperk van verkooppraatjes. Ik ben dankbaar dat je in de ontwikkeling van de vragen voor mijn proefschrift en in de tit-flycatcher meetings altijd van de partij geweest.
I also want to extend a special thanks to Maurine Dietz. Zonder jouw hulp bij de planning in het laatste half jaar van mijn promotie had ik me waarschijnlijk veel meer opgewonden dan nodig was geweest. Onze meetings waren altijd erg prettig en informeel en veilig en ik kwam er altijd beter weg dan ik me voor de meeting voelde. Plannen is niet mijn sterkste kant, maar jouw duwtjes in de goede richting hebben me erg geholpen om struc-tuur aan te brengen in de chaos die het af en toe is in mijn hoofd, waarvoor dank!

The field work has greatly benefited from the support of CareX Groningen, who provided one of the most stunning places in the Netherlands as a home base for our field work. The idyllic desolate cabin in Witteveen will always be on my mind as a place to come home to after a long and gruelling field day. Lenze, super bedankt dat ik af en toe ook buiten het veldseizoen de sleutel mocht hebben als ik even weg wilde van alle drukte. Heel erg fijn.
Most of my work involved experiments that required quite a bit of coordination, but the execution would have been impossible without a team to help do the delay experiments and clutch swaps. Thank you Stef, Elena, Rolf, Mariëlle, Peter, Wendy B, Susanne, Wendy de B, Erica, Iris, Hilde and Maurice for making this large scale experiment possible. Stef and Iris, I am happy our joint efforts have led to two nice publications. Elena, without your inspiring master thesis from 2012, there would probably not have been a paper after the 2013 field season. A special thanks to Susanne and Maurice as well, who were incre-dibly dedicated field workers. Also thank you for all the gezellige evenings after tiring field days.
I want to thank my paranymphs Hacen and Janne for organizing things surrounding this celebration. I also thank Nicole, Frank, and Pieter for helping out here and thinking about locations. Hacen, it is a shame the social drinks event never really got off the ground, but the times we did go were very nice. Also, cheers to all the people I shared offices with over the years, including Janne, Claudia, Marion, and Laura. I enjoyed discussing science or just generally catching up. I also want to thank Richard for organizing the database, for helping me to learn the ropes of the field work at the start, and for a photo I used for one of the chapters.
I want to thank all the people involved in tit-flycatchers meetings, including Christiaan, Joost, Rienk, Marion, Claudia, Elena, Janne, Marion, Richard and later Koosje and Xuelai. These lab meetings were very productive and stimulating. I am still of the opinion that cake celebrations should be extended to “failure to publish”, “failure to get a grant”, and “failure in general”. I am sorry to say I will not be there anymore to provide daily cake for the latter of these.
