Decoration impressed, incised with chisel (direction unknown). Rim diameter 9 cm. (10% preserved). Break 2.5YR 5/1, fabric EDW-2. Form and lay-out H 1c, D 7 (rhomboids). Surfaces very worn, treatment and original colour uncertain.

EDW 5: Berenike, BE98-21, late Roman trash dump, 5th c. CE. Weight 25 g. Average diameter 6.9 mm.

Inside 10YR 3/1, untreated. Outside 10YR 3/1, burnt.

Decoration incised with chisel (working left to right).

Rim diameter 18 cm. (15% preserved). Break 10YR 3/1, the fabric of this vessel suggests that this is possibly not Eastern Desert Ware but an import (Pamela J. Rose).

Possible parallel EDW 22 (Berenike).

EDW 15: Berenike. BE99-10 [365]; [378], centre of town, 1st-2nd c. CE. Weight 45 g. Average thickness 4.2 mm. Inside 7.5YR 5/4, smoothed. Outside 2.5YR 5/8, burnished, red slip. Rim diameter 16 cm. (16%

preserved). Break 5YR 3/2, fabric unclassified. Form and lay-out H 2b, unusual type without decoration but with four pair of 'lug-handles' instead. Carefully squared rim. Red slip spills over on inside rim. Possible parallels Wadi Qitna P 834 (Strouhal 1984, p. 163, Fig. 129), Hitan Rayan 51 (Sidebotham et al. 2002, p. 24, Fig.

20/51), EDW 59 (Berenike), EDW 131 (Tabot) and EDW 139 (Tabot).

EDW 16: Berenike, BE99-10 [374], centre of town, 4th-5th c. CE. Weight 50 g. Average thickness 4.8 mm.

Inside 5YR 5/4, burnished. Outside 5YR 5/8, burnished, red slip. Decoration impressed with triangular tool (working left to right). Rim diameter 17 cm. (17%

preserved. Break 5YR 5/3, fabric unclassified. Form and lay-out H 2a, D 5 (waves). May be from the same vessel as EDW 19. Carefully squared rim. Red slip spills over on inside rim.

EDW 17: Berenike, BE99-10 [374] & [ct] pb#735 &

763, centre of town, 4th-5th c. CE. Weight 100 g.

Average thickness 5.0 mm. Inside 2.5YR 5/8, smoothed.

Outside 2.5YR 5/6, red slip. Decoration impressed with chisel (direction unknown). Rim diameter 11 cm. (45%

preserved). Break 2.5YR 5/1, fabric unclassified. Form and lay-out H 7, D 3 (zigzag, waves).

EDW 18: Berenike, BE99-10 [374]; [396], centre of town, 3rd-4th c. CE. Weight 75 g. Average thickness 5.9 mm. Inside 10R 5/6, smoothed. Outside 10R 4/8, burnished, red slip. Decoration impressed with chisel, filled in (direction unknown). Rim diameter 18 cm. (11%

Decoration impressed, incised with chisel (direction unknown). Rim diameter 17 cm. (20% preserved). Break 10R 6/6, fabric unclassified. Form and lay-out H 2a, D 5 (triangles, waves). May be from the same vessel as EDW 16. Carefully squared rim. Red slip spills over on inside rim.

EDW 20: Berenike, BE99-10 [393], centre of town, 1st c. BC-1st c. CE(but possibly intrusive). Inside burnished. Outside burnished and red slipped.

Decoration incised and coloured. Form and lay-out H 1b, D 6 (lines). This sherd was misplaced and lost for further investigation. Possible parallel EDW 48 (Berenike).

EDW 21: Berenike, BE98-21, late Roman trash dump, 5th c. CE. Weight 18 g. Average thickness 7.8 mm.

Inside 7.5YR 4/2, burnished. Outside 7.5YR 4/2, untreated. Decoration incised, punctuated with round point (direction unknown). Rim diameter 21 cm. (5%

preserved). Break 7.5YR 5/3, fabric unclassified and possibly not Eastern Desert Ware but an import. Form and lay-out H 2b, D 2 (lines, running dog).
