“I just do not understand the logic of this”

Intervention study aimed at secondary school students’

development of logical reasoning skills

1. Voor de ontwikkeling van logisch redeneervaardigheden van leerlingen is onderwijs in formeel deductief redeneren niet voldoende (dit proefschrift).

2. Onderwijs in logisch redeneren waarbij expliciete aandacht is voor de overgangen en verbanden van concrete naar abstracte representaties (zoals benadrukt in het model of concreteness fading (Fyfe et al., 2014)), draagt bij aan betere redeneervaardigheden en meer gebruik van formalisaties (dit proefschrift).

3. Het zelf construeren van representaties door leerlingen ondersteunt het logisch redeneren (dit proefschrift).

4. Lessen waarin leerlingen formalisaties uitwisselen in kleine groepjes geven die leerlingen inzicht in het nut van formalisaties voor verschillende typen redeneringen (dit proefschrift).

5. Het domein logisch redeneren, met als doel de redeneervaardigheden van leerlingen te verbeteren op allerlei gebieden in de huidige (informatie)maatschappij, zou in alle wiskundevakken op alle niveaus opgenomen moeten worden.

6. In het belang van de ontwikkeling van het kritisch denken en de bijbehorende redeneervaardigheden van leerlingen, kan logisch redeneren het beste vakoverstijgend aangeboden worden.

7. Als de lezer bovenstaande stellingen waar vindt, dan is deze stelling ook waar.
