Acknowledgements

Almost five years of PhD have come to an end with many highs and lows, all contributing to a wonderful time full of growing and learning. Nothing in this thesis would look the way it does though, without the help and support of many people, inside and outside the lab. I would like to express my deep gratitude here in this section.

First and foremost, Adri, what a ride this has been! I have learned so much from you in the past years and it’s been wonderful to work with you. Throughout the darkest moments, you have been there with kindness and support, and in the times of success you were always ready with words of celebration and encouragement. After every meeting with you, I left your office feeling better than when I entered it, mostly with a big smile on my face. Your attitude towards science and chemistry keeps on inspiring and motivating me. I am so grateful for working with you, learning from you and all your support. Thank you!

Marthe, you are such a role model for me. Your way of looking at unexpected outcomes of experiments with curiosity is truly amazing. Thank you for all the help and support in moments of hardship and all the lessons I could learn from you. I am convinced you will have a long and successful academic career ahead of you!

I would like to also thank the members of the reading committee, Prof. Janine Cossy, Prof. Floris Rutjes and Prof. Ben Feringa, for taking the time to read this thesis and helping to improve the manuscript with their useful comments. I would like to thank all the collaborators for their contributions and help on the various projects in this thesis: Prof. Branch Moody, Dr. Ildiko Van Rhijn, Josephine Reijneveld, Alexandrea Ramnarine, Dr. David Young and Prof. Sho Yamasaki for their contributions to the DAT project. Dr. Martine Gilleron for her continuing help on the PAT project. Prof. Jaap Sinninghe Damsté and Prof. Stefan Schouten for their contributions and great scientific discussions relating to the crenarchaeol project. It’s been a pleasure working with all of you!

I also thank all the technical staff in the institute for all their help with instrumentation and analysis, in particular Theodora, Renze & Monique.

CHAPTER 8

A very special thanks to Pieter and Johan for all their help with the NMR measurements, especially of the final products.

For all the organization and help inside and outside the lab, I’d like to thank Paulien, Marzia and Hilda.

I would have never gotten to this point without the lessons I learned from working in the lab as a Master student. Julien, you have been a true mentor and friend, and inspired me to work hard to get a PhD position in total synthesis. I wish you could have been able to see what you helped achieve. I miss you dearly. Jeffrey, you have taught me so many things during my internship with you, from working with neat diethyl zinc to how to not create fountains from a borohydride quench. Thank you for all the great moments and the many laughs we shared and I am happy to have been able to work with you also during my PhD.

Throughout my PhD I had the pleasure of guiding various students and learning from them. Lotte Stindt, Giorgios Misiakos, Simon Blok and Rob Lammers, thank you all for the great time and your contributions.

A special thanks goes to my paranymphs: Nadja, you can’t imagine how much I always enjoyed all the laughter and (sometimes raging) conversations in the lab. Also, thanks for all the relaxing evenings talking over wine and food. And of course, all the hedgehog videos! Michael, thanks for all the evenings drinking at the Minnaar full of laughter and science philosophy discussions. And also, thanks for the all the fun bouldering sessions, you master-motivator!

Of course, I owe a lot of gratitude to all the members of the Minnaard group and the whole department. Since I will surely forget some names I want to thank all current and past members of the department for help and contributing to the atmosphere in the group. Also, I’d like to thank the people in the alpha-lab, Nabil, Niek Eisink, Steven, Nittert and Niels for all the laughter. Stella, thanks for all the coffee breaks and of course all the advice on carbohydrate chemistry. Niek, thanks for always being up for chatting whenever I would come to the gamma-lab. Ruben, thank you for always having good advice on lipid-related synthetic problems. Liubov, thanks for having always an open ear and the wonderful times in the office.

Of course, I would also like to thank other former and current members of the institute. Nadja and Stefano, you two are truly amazing, and I’m so glad I can

call you my friends. Also, thanks to Michael, Daniel, Daisy, Brian and Niklas for the fun bouldering sessions. Thanks also to all the other people for the great times: Jane, Wiktor, Ilse, Mark, Jana, Michael Lerch, Dusan, Filippo, Dorus, José and many more.

To Friederike and Ashmir, you two are truly amazing people. I can’t describe how much your friendship means to me and I can’t wait for the next dinner date with lots of laughter and wine and delicious food!

Romain, you have been with me through this PhD, first from the distance and then right here in Groningen. Throughout these years you were my rock. I can’t begin to describe how much you have contributed to this journey. You have encouraged me, motivated me, taught me new things and shown me what a true scientist at heart looks like. There is so much I could thank you for so I will just say thank you for everything. Bisous.
