CKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This dissertation has greatly benefitted from the advice, comments, critical questions and rewarding discussion as well as the encouragement and support of many different people. Therefore, I would like to thank you for all the different contributions you have made along the way – without you, this dissertation would have never been possible.
First of all, I would like to thank my supervisors, Sven Voelpel and Astrid Homan. Sven, you are an outstanding visionary with an incredible talent to network – both with respect to people and concepts. Therefore, you are never afraid to walk new streets and find creative solutions to whatever challenges might arise. In this spirit, you have provided me with the needed autonomy to develop my own research, supported my projects, and encouraged me to aim high. You have provided me with a variety of different opportunities to learn and grow, for which I am thankful. Astrid, you are an extremely well-organized and smart person, and to have you as a mentor has been a very wonderful experience. Thank you for the enormous effort you have devoted not only to our research project, but also to making me a better researcher. You never got tired of providing guidance and answering questions, and always helped me to improve my work. Through our thought-provoking discussions, your constructive feedback, and the many different insights into the cosmos of science, I have learned so much about developing research, reasoning with greater precision, and writing actual papers.
Furthermore, I thank Klaus Boehnke, member of the PhD Committee at Jacobs University Bremen, and Mark van Vugt, promotor at the VU University Amsterdam. Professor
Boehnke, you truly embody the vocation of both a researcher and an educator. You always made time – no matter how short noticed – to meet and discuss my progress. I am
evolutionary view on leadership and identification with me and thereby enabled me to see my research also in light of what we humans are essentially. I very much enjoyed our discussions about research models, results, and their meaning and have learned a lot from you about conducting meaningful research. Furthermore, I thank you for supporting my research plans and for providing timely feedback, whenever needed.
Additionally, I am very grateful to the former and current colleagues of the WISE-research group. Without your advice, practical hints, the many stimulating (scientific) discussions, proofreading and feedback, lunches, cakes, and social get-togethers, as well as your support and friendship this dissertation journey would not have been the same. A special thank you goes to Diana Boer. During your time at our research group and beyond, you have
introduced me to the arts of writing scientific papers – I love your quantitative approach to qualitative writing –, shared your various skills to analyze data, and never failed to have a gentle word for me. Without your support and encouragement, I would have never even looked into the possibility of conducting a meta-analysis.
Moreover, I would like to thank DB Services GmbH for supporting my dissertation during the past four years. Through our close collaboration, I was able to gain extraordinary insights into the functioning of large companies and this dissertation has benefitted greatly from bringing together scientific inquiry with organizational needs. In this regard, I would like to thank especially those colleagues that have actively promoted the project and contributed to its success – I really appreciate it.
wine and Schokobons, ridiculous laughs, shared tears, funny stories, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There is so much I would like to thank you for, but I’ll simply say that you have become one of my closest friends and you know what I owe you. Curly, we both share a passion for adventure, research, and numbers, and you truly understand what writing a dissertation means. Thank you for all your support during this dissertation, and especially for your invaluable effort and time devoted to discussions, suggestions, motivational speeches, and proofreading towards the end of the PhD process. I am so thankful to have a friend like you.
Finally, I would like to express my deepest-felt gratitude to my family. I thank my grandmother for being an awesome role-model of a strong-minded, enthusiastic woman who is always willing to share the accumulated wisdom of a lifetime with me. My parents, Heidi and Henning – thank you for all your never-ending love and immense support during this dissertation and always. You are the best parents a daughter could ask for. Anke, from early childhood on you had to endure a curious sister, who loved to ask for reasons behind things and explain everything with her – admittedly, sometime strange – theories about the world. Thank you for exploring this world with me, for being at my side no matter what, and for being such a gorgeous sister.
My very special thank you is devoted to Johannes. Joe, sharing life with me, especially through the ups and downs of this dissertation, has certainly been challenging at times. You always keep faith in me and put my concerns – about research and life in general – into perspective. I love celebrating the small victories together and am grateful that you are simply there when I need you. Thank you for reminding me every day that life is beautiful.
