PORVOO, WELCOME TO TOUKOVUORI DAY-CARE CENTRE

Toukovuori is the second largest of the 21 municipal day-care centres in Porvoo.

Nine private day-care centres or groups also operate in the town. Toukovuori Day- care centre serves children needing non-standard early childhood education and care in the entire town.

Toukovuori opened on 28th of December in 2017, at which time non-standard hour child care in Porvoo was centralised to this unit. Toukovuori is open round the clock if parents have booked care hours for their children in advance.

With a few exceptions, all children at the day-care centre need care during non- standard hours. Those who need ECEC during daytime hours (6:00 am. – 6.00 pm) usually are children living in surrounding neighbourhood area of the day care centre.

Some children may attend regular time ECEC at a different centre in the area but use Toukovuori’s services on a very occasional basis, when he/she needs care in

evenings, nights or weekends.

Care hours and child groups

The first children arrive at 5:30 in the morning, and the last ones leave at 22:30. If a child needs overnight care, he or she arrives by 20:00 at the latest. Depending on the parents’ shifts, children may stay at the centre from a few hours to couple of days at a time.

There is room for 113 children and for six child groups, one of which is Swedish- speaking. We do not operate as six different groups, however, and in practice, each

the evenings and at weekends. Toukovuori currently has 95 children; a coefficient of 1.75 is applied to children aged under three (3), which decreases the number of children the centre can care for.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, a club for 2.5-year-olds organised by open ECEC services also operates at Toukovuori between 8:30 and 11:30. The club is free of charge and intended for children who are cared for at home.

High-quality ECEC

Toukovuori employs 25 professionals with educational responsibility, seven of whom are kindergarten teachers and 18 practical nurses. The day-care centre also has a director. The employees’ working time is 38.45 hours a week.

The day-care centre follows the National Core Curriculum for ECEC, which stresses children’s participation and taking their opinions into account when planning the activities. It is important for children to have enough physical activity and exercise each day, and they are encouraged to be active not only outdoors but also in the indoor facilities. The children play outside every day, and excursions to nearby woods are made on a weekly basis. The day-care centre’s group facilities, workshop and gym enable all children to participate in versatile activities as indicated by their needs.

Cooperation with a sheltered housing unit for older people

Toukovuori Day-care centre regularly cooperates with a sheltered housing unit for older persons located nearby. The children and the older people visit each other,

and both groups participate in each other's festivities and events, including a Midsummer's party, Shrove Tuesday festival and Independence Day celebrations.

The older persons are also invited to take outdoor exercise in the day-care centre’s play area whenever they wish and to the extent they are able to do so.
