OPSOMMING

Ter vervulling van die graad van Magister in Kreatiewe Afrikaanse Skryfkunde is ʼn roman getiteld Kielhaal voorgelê waarin die hoofkarakter ʼn abjekte held is. Dit word vergesel met ʼn verbandhoudende beskoulike werkstuk: “Die abjekte held in

Steppenwolf, Fight Club en A Whistling Woman”, wat die vorm aanneem van ʼn essay oor die aanwending van die abjekte held in literêre tekste.

In die werkstuk word ʼn teoretiese bespreking aangepak met die doel om ʼn vereenvoudigde definisie van die abjekte held daar te stel. In die lig van veral Bernstein se teorieë word die abjekte held as draer van ʼn veronderstelde

outeursagenda ondersoek. Die werk van Kristeva binne die psigoanalise word betrek, en moontlike raakpunte tussen die teorieë van Kristeva en Bernstein word bespreek.

Geheelinterpretasies word geskep na aanleiding van biografiese inligting omtrent outeurs, hul eie uitsprake omtrent hul skrywerlike doelwitte, asook algemene tendense in hul oeuvre. Die konsep van die outeursagenda word ook geproblematiseer, veral met verwysing na die werk van Roland Barthes. Binne die raamwerk van die geheellesings word die skrywerlike aanwending van die abjekte held in drie

geselekteerde romans beskou. Daar word veral ondersoek ingestel na die potensiaal van die abjekte held as draer van maatskappykritiek. Deur middel van ʼn tweede, alternatiewe lesing, word die onhoudbaarheid van die idee van ʼn finale interpretasie gedemonstreer.

Die roman Kielhaal is ʼn satire wat fokus op Simon Afrika, ʼn aanbieder op ʼn realiteitsprogram. Die verhaal speel af in die laaste twee dae van ʼn plesiervaart aan boord van die Fantasy, ʼn luukse passassierskip. Vanuit Simon se bewussyn word sy interne worsteling uitgebeeld. Wanneer die skip deur sy voormalige kaptein gekaap word, begin Simon die moontlikheid van ʼn uitkoms sien. Die verhaal word uit vyf perspektiewe vertel.

SYNOPSIS

In fulfilment of the degree of Magister in Creative Writing: Afrikaans, a novel titled Kielhaal (Keelhaul) is presented in which the main character figures as an abject hero.

It is accompanied by a formal essay titled “Die abjekte held in Steppenwolf, Fight Club en A Whistling Woman” (“The abject hero in Steppenwolf, Fight Club and A Whistling Woman”). The essay researches the application of the abject hero in literary texts.

The essay comprises a theoretical argument towards a simplified definition of the abject and a practical investigation of three selected abject heroes. The theories of Bernstein as presented in Bitter Carnival: Ressentiment and the Abject Hero are used extensively. Kristeva’s notion of the psychoanalytical abject is discussed, and possible transitions between the Bernsteinian and the Kristevian notions are speculated upon.

Taking biographical information, writers’ own statements as regards their writing aims, and general trends within a writer’s oeuvre into account, reading hypotheses are formulated for each novel under discussion. These are used as frameworks for

discussions of the writerly application of the abject hero, and specifically his potential to be a carrier of social critique. The concept of the author’s intention is

problematised, with special reference to the work of Roland Barthes, and the

impossibility of a final interpretation is demonstrated by a second, alternative reading of each text.

The novel Kielhaal is a satire that focuses on Simon Afrika, the presenter of a reality show. It is set in the last two days of a cruise on board the Fantasy, a luxury liner.

Simon’s internal struggle is represented from his perspective. When the ship is hijacked by its former captain, Simon begins to see the possibility of an escape. The story is told from five perspectives.
