I spent my late 20s doing a PhD, which is an important training to be creative and independent. I wish to thank all the people that appeared in my life during these wonderful years.

First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Pascale Dijkers. She was the one who gave me the opportunity to start the project and has been supportive during the whole project. She guided me to learn Drosophila genetics and many other techniques. She taught me how to do a better design for experiments. Also, she helped me to improve my writing and presentation skills. I am grateful to have her as my supervisor.

I want to thank Ody Sibon who, over the years, always listened and gave good suggestions during all the meetings we had. She spent a lot of time to help me complete my thesis.

I would like to acknowledge the members of the reading committee, Professor B.J.L Eggen, Professor E. M. Hol, and Professor D. S. Verbeek for carefully reading and evaluating this thesis.

Francesco and Wondwossen, no matter how many times I say thank you and no matter how good my English is to express my deep gratitude to you, it will never be enough! I am the only child in my family, therefore I have never known how it feels to have brothers or sisters. However, if I had brothers, they would be exactly like the two of you. You were always there to help me with my problems. You always gave me good feedback on my project, you always helped me to figure out technical problems in my experiments. And, you always cheer me up. The stickers (with strange faces, crying faces, smiley faces, and “be happy”) that you put on my desk, I will keep them with me wherever I go from here.

It was great to share an office with Anita, Liza, Jan, Fra, and Wondy. I also feel lucky to work together with Roald, Nico, Balaji, Madina, Yuyi, and Hein. The atmosphere that we had, made me feel free to discuss everything. I often bothered Anita, Jan and Roald with translations of my Dutch documents. I got suggestions from Nico and Hein to improve protocols. I enjoyed the dinner that we had at Nico’s place and the sushi night. I want to thank Madina, via whom I got to know Midas, who did a super nice design for my thesis cover.

I would like to thank dear Bas, who helped me with performing the screen and was always kind and patient.

The 5th floor is really a nice place to work, I enjoyed every moment I spent here.

Everyone is nice and friendly. I would especially like to thank all of the following people.

Dear Harrie, I enjoyed every conversation we had, not only because of your critical comments, but also the encouragement you gave me. I wish I could have had more discussions with you.

I would like to thank Steven who gave me nice suggestions after my presentations and helped me wrestle with the confocal early in the morning.

I need to thank Despina, Matteo, Els, Eduardo, Malanie, Vaishali, Wouter and Suzanne. When I joined Lab meeting in your group, I always got good feedback. Dear Despina, I probably did something super brilliant in my last life to have, as a reward, you as my friend in this life. You helped me a lot with solving problems with the protocol of the soluble/insoluble fraction experiment. Also, thank you so much for helping me to improve writing and presentations. The time that we were trying to finish the thesis and writing together in many different places (UMCG Library, the room on the 10th floor, Zernike study room, Central Library and Coffee Company)

will always be a cherished part in my memory. Because of you, writing was not boring at all.

I would like to thank all the people in Rob’s group, Peter, Cecilia, Daisy, Paola, Lara, Vivian, Julie and Yi. I had a great time with you inside and outside the lab. Thank you all for helping me doing new experiments, introducing me to new techniques and comforting me when I was upset. Peter, you are a special one, I feel I can talk to you about everything. Thank you for not getting annoyed by my “belly-harass”. Cecilia, you are a beautiful one, always ready to help people. Daisy, your hard-working style has been an inspiration for me. I am lucky to have you as a true friend. I enjoyed the dinners we had.

I would like to thank Bart, Marianne, Ellie, Jeanette, Maria, Mirjam, Anne, and Hette. All the things that you helped me in the lab saved my experiments. Bart, thank you for being at my wedding, and always reminding me for the anniversary. Marianne, thank you for teaching me how to run a better blot. I like your voice; it always comforted me whenever I felt a bit sad. Also, I really enjoyed that we did run 4 miles together, twice! You inspired me to practice more!

I would like to thank Klaas, who helped me to learn how to use the confocal. Also I want to thank everyone in the DCB for all the suggestions and helpful comments I received during the DCB meetings.

From Tango, I understand the importance of being patient to concentrate on understanding what is happening and then make a movement. This can not only be applied to dance but also to do a PhD. Many thanks to dear Inez, Rob, Frank and Koen, who brought Tango into my life. You are always nice and kind. I had a lot of fun with all of you.
