Doing a PhD project is fully filled with the happiness of achieving initial goals, new surprising findings and hardships of accidents or unexpected failures. This moment, I have gone through most of them and I am finally getting there. During this whole journey, I feel so lucky and happy to work with my colleagues and enjoyed every important moment with all my friends. Thus, I would like to thank you to be in my PhD life.
Hans, I still remember that moment of reading your email in replying to my PhD application. I felt so happy and shared it with my master research group. I appreciated the opportunity you gave me to come here and your guide in the past four years. Especially, at the beginning of my PhD, I quite struggled as a new foreigner and you were very nice, patient and continuously encouraging me. I enjoy every meeting with you and always get many useful suggestions. Thank you very much!
Edwin, you are a nice person. When I first entered Physics and Chemistry building, it was you who picked me up to the lab, gave me a warm welcome and introduced me to everyone. Later when I told others which group I worked for, their first response was that Edwin is a nice person. Indeed, you treat us like family. Even when you are busy, you are always ready to help us with our projects and our lives. During the first two years, our chemistry projects did not go well and I struggled with almost everything. As my daily supervisor, it must be also a difficult time for you. Without your kind and patient help, I wouldn’t be able to overcome them and finish the PhD in time. Many thanks!
I would like to thank the members of the reading committee: Prof. Antonio Mezzetti, Prof. Adri Minnaard and Prof. Gerard Roelfes for going through my thesis and your kind suggestions and comments to improve my thesis.
I also want to express my gratitude to Prof. Antonio Mezzetti for the nice collaboration in October 2019. During the whole month in Zurich, I appreciated Alessandro Passera for your guide in the lab and I enjoyed the time with you, Hari and Kun.
Francesca, it is great to be your friend, colleague and share the office with you for four years. You always prepare surprises for your friends at their important event. Not every Chinese will celebrate his/her birthday every year, and I am one of them. But you and others bought a cake and the presents for me on my birthday in 2016, my first year in Groningen. I was surprised and later I learned that in the Dutch way, I was supposed to buy cakes for others. And as you have a strong sense of responsibility, you did a good job as a senior PhD in the group. Thank you for your help during the past four years and I am sure you are facing a bright future in the Netherlands with Marco.

Jelte and Folkert, thank you for being my paranymphs and helping me so much in the past four years. It is lucky for me to have you around for these years. When I joined the group, you just started your master. You guys helped me to familiar with the building and institute at my beginning. Additionally, as Dutch, you tell me the stories behind the Dutch culture and helped me to solve many problems in life. I still remembered that you taught me the Dutch traffic rule after my small accident. And you let me join your life, introducing friends to me. By the way, I did have very good naps in Jelte’s sofa on your birthdays!
I would like to acknowledge the (former) colleagues. Johan, we just worked together for one year, while we did have a nice publication and many drunk pictures. At the beginning, you gave me a list of places of interest in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, I didn’t visit all of them. Ranajit, as the lab supervisor, you helped me a lot during these years and gave me many suggestions. We also had many good times during the travels in Barcelona and Girona. Now you are in the USA, I hope you are well and wish you a lot of success. Denise, Imke and Silene, it is not easy for you to do a small project under my supervision, since my project in the first two years didn’t go well. But all of you did a good job at the end. Onno and Linda, many thanks for working together and nice chat during the leisure time. By the way, because of you, I know what the difference is between vegan and vegetarian. I would also thank Renske, Edwin (Eddie), Tamara, Luuk, Sumeet,Arjan, Jules, Emma, Jacob, Daniel and all the others for the good moments we have spent together.
Since Dr. Johannes set up his group in Groningen, our two groups become very close friends. I would also like to thank Dr. Johannes for the nice discussion during group meetings and invited me and my girlfriend Linan to his wedding. It was wonderful and we had a really good time there. I really enjoyed the time that our two groups spent together, and I deeply thank you Taegeun, Kristo, Evagniya, Isaac and all the other members for these great moments, like Rondje Biotoop, Christmas borrel, conferences, barbeques, etc.
I am also grateful to Oetze, Pieter, Johan, Renze, Monique, Theodora for your help on technical and analytical support.
I would like to thank Prof. Wesley R. Browne for the useful discussions during the Molan meetings. And all Molan members: Juan, Jorn, Hans, Sandeep as well as others, Thank you for the help and great moments we spent together during the nice Molan trip. Out of inorganic departments, I also met many great friends and had a lot of fun. Many thanks to you, George, Marco, Sven, Anirban, Yafei, Luo, Xingchen, Zhuohua, Xianyuan, Yongzhuang, Gang, Yuru, Gongbao, Viktor, Franco, Shaoyu, Zhi.
To whom I may have forgotten, I am unintentional to do this. Please accept my sincere apologies.
