As the Book of Changes says “It is not given to every mortal to bring about a time of outstanding greatness and abundance. Only a born ruler of men is able to do it, because his will is directed to what is great. He must be like the sun at midday, illuminating and gladdening everything under heaven”. I would like to thank Prof. dr. Klaas Nico Faber and Prof. dr. Han Moshage, for giving me the opportunity of PhD candidacy at Hepatology and Gasteroenterology Department of Groningen University. The time that I spent in your lab was the golden era of my life. I learned a lot and enjoyed every moment of it.

I would like to thank MDL group specially my colleagues Dr. Floris Haijer, Dr. Ali Saeed, Dr. Jackey Bai, Dr. Natalia Smit-Cortinez, Mrs. Janette Heegsma, Mrs. Manon Buist-Homan, Mr. Tjasso Blokzijl, Dr. Marjolein Tilkema-Tiebosch, Dr. Alfredo Rios Ocampo, Dr. Atta Rehman, Mr. Mark Hoekstra and Ms. Esther Verhaag for their valuable collaboration and support. It was an absolute pleasure working with such an incredible team.

I owe many thanks to my parents, my sister, my husband and my parents in law for their ongoing support and encouragement. I am very lucky to have you in my life.
