Dee auteur van dit proefschrift werd geboren op 31 juli 1973 in Nijmegen. Hij behaaldee zijn VWO diploma in 1991 aan het mr. dr. J.C. de Miranda Lyceum tee Paramaribo. In 1991 begon hij met de studie Geneeskunde aan de Rijksuniversiteitt Leiden, waar hij het doctoraalexamen haalde in 1996 en het artsexamenn in 1998. Van 1998 tot en met eind 2000 was hij werkzaam als arts-assistentt niet in opleiding (AGNIO) op de afdeling Inwendige Geneeskundee in het Leyenburgziekenhuis te Den Haag. Tijdens deze periode iss hij ook 4 maanden werkzaam geweest als AGNIO op de afdeling Cardiologie.. Sinds begin 2001 was hij werkzaam als arts-onderzoeker bij het Internationall Antiviral Therapy Evaluation Center (IATEC) en de HIV polikliniekk van het Academisch Medisch Centrum (AMC) te Amsterdam. Hier werd,, onder leiding van prof. dr. J.M.A. Lange en dr. J.M. Prins, het onderzoekk verricht dat in dit proefschrift wordt gepresenteerd. In april 2004 is hijj gestart met de opleiding tot Internist in het AMC.
