Evelien Lemstra werd geboren op 17 augustus 1972 te Groningen. Hoewel ze deze stad snel verliet belandde zij na het behalen van haar diploma Gymnasium- aan het Eindhovens Protestants Lyceum in 1990 weer in Groningen. Daar studeerde zij Geneeskunde aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In 1995 deed zij een wetenschappelijke stage op de afdeling kinderoncologie van het Kalafong Hospitaal te Pretoria, Zuid-Afrika. Na het afronden van de co-schappen beëindigde zij haar studie in 1998 met een wetenschappelijke stage aan The National Institutes of Health in Bethesda (NINCDS) en The Johns Hopkins Medical Centre (Dept. of Neurosurgery) in Baltimore, VS. Na Amerika vertrok zij naar Amsterdam. Daar startte zij in 1999 als assistent niet-in-opleiding op de afdeling Neurologie van het AMC. In 2000 begon zij met de opleiding tot neuroloog in het AMC onder supervisie van Prof dr. Jan Stam. Gedurende haar opleiding deed zij promotie-onderzoek waarin dit proefschrift resulteerde onder leiding van Prof dr. Pim van Gool en Prof dr. Piet Eikelenboom. In januari 2007 werd ze neuroloog en bleef verbonden aan de Polikliniek Geheugenstoornissen van het AMC. Sinds december 2007 werkt zij als neuroloog op de afdeling Neurologie en het Alzheimercentrum van het VUMC te Amsterdam.
