Haiti Weather Hazards and Benefits Assessment

For

October 1 – 7, 2009

Throughout the northeastern quarter of Haiti and eastward across much of the Dominican Republic rainfall totals surpassing 75 mm characterized the September 24th – 30th observation period. Elsewhere rainfall was suppressed, especially along the southern peninsula of Haiti where second season rains remain around 50% of average. Since August rainfall totals for many local areas in the Sud-Est department have been below average. In the southwestern peninsula departments, precipitation has been near-normal, resulting in favorable conditions for bean harvests this season. Moderate rainfall totals, ranging from 20 – 40 mm, are expected across the island for the October 1st – 7th observation period.
