Curriculum Vitae
Robbert-Jan Harmen van der Burg was born on January 26, 1988, in Zwolle, the Netherlands. In 2005, he started studying Industrial Product Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in engineering in 2009. Subsequently, he graduated in 2010 from the Saxion University of Applied Sciences, where he followed a 90 ECTS program to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management. Then, Robbert-Jan continued studying at the University of Groningen. In 2011, he finished the pre-master Technology Management and in 2013 he obtained his Master’s degree in Technology and Operations Management. During his Master’s thesis research project, executed at TNO, he started specializing in sustainable energy. In this research project, he studied the stakeholder interactions and dynamics of various biogas business ecosystems, gaining insights into the value creation of this industry. A conference paper based on his Master’s thesis has been presented and published in the proceedings of the 2014 EurOMA International Conference on Operations Management in Palermo.
After graduating, Robbert-Jan started his professional career as a Junior Researcher at the University of Groningen, where he was involved in an innovation project of the Energy Delta Gas Research (EDGaR) Project. In this project, an online serious game has been developed in which multiple players could re-enact and simulate investments in biogas infrastructure. In 2014, together with his later PhD supervisors prof. dr. ir. Hans Wortmann and prof. dr. George Huitema, Robbert-Jan was involved in a successful grant application from which his doctoral research originates. In April 2015, Robbert-Jan started his PhD trajectory at the department of Operations at the University of Groningen. As a PhD student, Robbert-Jan attended various international conferences (e.g., EurOMA, POMS, and IAEE) in both Europe and the USA where he presented intermediate results of his research. During his PhD trajectory, Robbert-Jan supervised various master students (Technology and Operations Management and Supply Chain Management) during their thesis research projects with topics related to his PhD research. Further, Robbert-Jan was also involved in the European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management, where he was teaching in the Intelligent Information Services course.
In April 2020, Robbert-Jan continued his career at Enexis, a Dutch energy distribution system operator. Here, he is in the position of Advisor strategy in the department of Market facilitation, focusing on the topics of energy flexibility (e.g., involved in the development and implementation of congestion management) and energy data exchanges.
