Inge Spronk was born on the 13th of November 1989, in Breda, the Netherlands. After graduation from high school (KSE, Etten-leur) in 2008, she moved to Wageningen to study Nutrition and Health at Wageningen University. During her second year, she followed an additional education (CIOS tennis coach). In her third year, she did a
six-month minor in Rehabilitation Sciences and
Physiotherapy at Ghent University. She received her Bachelor’s degree in 2011, after which she proceeded with the Master Nutrition and Health (specialization Nutrition Physiology and Health Status). Her master thesis was titled: ‘Association of the Dutch Healthy Diet index with BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio and blood pressure’. Inge moved to Sydney, Australia, for a six-month internship at the discipline of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Sydney. Under supervision of dr Helen O’Connor, she examined the relation between nutrition knowledge and dietary intake, and studied the effect of glycemic index of a pre-exercise meal on endurance pre-exercise performance. This work resulted in three publications in peer-reviewed journals. Her second internship was at Innosportlab Papendal, where she was involved in the validation of the ‘Functionele voedingsmonitor voor Individuele Topsporters’ (FIT) application for dietary intake in elite athletes.
After receiving her Master’s degree in 2013, she started working as a junior researcher at the department of General Practice of the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (Nivel). At Nivel, she worked at various research projects, most related to primary health care, aftercare for cancer patients and shared decision making. This work resulted in several reports and international publications. In September 2016, Inge started her PhD project at the Association of Dutch Burn Centers in the Burn Center of the Maasstad Hospital, which was a close collaboration with the department of Public Health of the Erasmus MC. Her research focused on short and long-term consequences, and the burden of disease of burn injuries. As part of her PhD, Inge visited the Burn Unit of the Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth to learn more about burn care in another setting and to work with data from their systematically recorded outcome registry. The results of her PhD project are described in this thesis.
Inge her PhD appointment was part-time. Therefore, she had two part-time positions alongside. From February 2018 until February 2020, she worked at the department of General Practice at Nivel, where she was mainly involved in writing project proposals. Since July 2018, she has a position at the department of Public Health of Erasmus MC, where she is mainly working on projects about quality of life of injury patients. Inge received funding to continue her research in burn care. In the next two years, she will combine this with her work at Erasmus MC.
