Acknowledgements

Since my PhD journey has finally hit the finish line, I would like to thank all the people who did assist me during my PhD research and during my stay in Groningen and Aachen over the past several years. Without their support I wouldn’t have been able to finish my PhD thesis. They often encouraged and guided me during this long PhD journey and made my stay in Groningen and Aachen enjoyable.

First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisor Prof. Andreas Herrmann who gave me the opportunity to be a part of his outstanding research team. Your willingness to accept me into your lab as a PhD student has certainly transformed my life. You believed in me and allowed me to work on fascinating projects with a great degree of freedom. I sincerely appreciate your continuous support and guidance. During my PhD you always inspired me with all your creative ideas which helped me to perform many interesting research. Thank you so much for the amazing experience that I have got working with you and I wish you the best of luck.

I would also like to convey my acknowledgements to the member of the assessment committee – Prof. Wilfried Weber, Prof. Friedrich Simmel and Prof. Albert Guskov for evaluating and accepting my thesis.

Next, I would like to thank Dr. Arnold Boersma and Dr. Lifei Zheng with whom I have collaborated during my PhD. My PhD journey would not have been finished without your guidance. Dear Arnold, I am lucky that part of my PhD thesis has been supervised by you. You guided me in writing my manuscripts. I have been able to understand many things about my projects through our meetings. I must admit that you showed immense interest and care about my work even though I was lazy and took time in communicating with you. Dear Lifei, over those many years working together I believe we both learnt many things from each other. I learnt about the azobenzene and how it works under different wavelength, I guess I have been able to explain you properly about different biological techniques. Even though you are a chemist but still you showed a great deal of interest in biology and I truly admire you for that. You not only helped me in my experiments but also took care of writing the manuscript. I really enjoyed working with you and I will not forget the scientific discussions that we have had during our experiments.

Gurudas, you are not only my colleague but also a brother. Honestly, I need a lot of space to write about your contribution on my PhD journey, but I need to make it short. When I came to Netherlands I didn’t know how to cook, but you taught me how to cook and I am so grateful for that :-). If I hadn’t met you I would have never known that a guy can cook so many dishes with equally good taste. I never had to worry about dinner :-). Beside cooking, I would remember our discussion about science and many other topics. Whenever we discussed about my work, you used to ask critical questions which helped me a lot. You also pushed me to finish my PhD as soon as possible. I am truly grateful to have you as my colleague and brother during my PhD.

Jingyi, like Lifei you also helped me a lot in understanding the photochemistry of azobenzene. I would have not been able to finish my third chapter without your help. You always helped me by providing all the chemical compounds that I needed to finish the third chapter. Moreover, I will not forget all our discussions that we had during the experiments. You helped me immediately whenever I had any questions or doubts regarding our work.

Eliza, you are undoubtedly the one who has helped me most to finish my PhD thesis. I have been able to finish three chapters because of your help. Whenever I asked you for the chemical compounds, you helped me without any hesitation. But it’s not just helping in my research, I will never forget those days when you, me, Willem, Agnieszka and Mark enjoyed our time beside our lab works. I will never forget our conversations that we shared in the coffee room. I will always cherish those beautiful memories.

Willem and Agnieszka, you two are very special in my PhD journey. Bhaiya, I am truly blessed to have someone like you during my PhD. You are the one who helped me like a brother when I joined the group. From purchasing bike to helping in research, you always came forward to help me. Agnieszka, like Willem, you never hesitated to help me in Groningen. If I had any problems with Chemistry, I knew there was somebody in the Chemistry lab who could always help me. Apart from daily lab work, you were always active in organising group party on the corridor. You both are brilliant personality and I wish you all the best.

Mark, thank you for all your help throughout my PhD. I will not forget those early days in Groningen when we used to discuss about my projects. That time you were the only one with whom I could discuss about biology. You helped me a lot in cloning. You are a true gift for our group who supports our group through

outstanding management skills. I really enjoyed working together and having all the scientific discussions.

Deepak and Agnieszka, it was always fun to spend time with you. I will never forget our trip to Poland to attend Willem-Agnieszka’s marriage. I wish you best of luck.

Finally, I would like to thank all other PCBE group members who supported my PhD journey – Yu, Pengkun, Xintong, Qing, Wei, Diego, Alessio, Pavlo, Jing, Chao, Kai, Hongyan, Shuaidong, Miancheng and the new colleagues with whom I have worked in Aachen – Christiane, Melina, Tim, Anne, Aman, Fahimeh, Ming, Deniz, Mingjun, Jilin, Oliver, Tina, Milara, Qi, Weiyan, Theo, Burak. I will also miss the fun time working with Lulu. You were always active in our group and never hesitated to help others. It was pleasure to work and spend time with all of them.
