161 With the last few pages, I would like to thank all the people who accompanied me and helped me during my PhD research and during my stay in Groningen in the past years. Without the support from you, I could never get my thesis done. You all deserve my sincere gratitude!

First and foremost, I would like to give my deepest gratitude to my supervisor, Prof.

Andreas Herrmann. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to conduct this PhD

project in your group. Your willingness to accept me into your lab has transformed not only my PhD, but also myself. I appreciated your constant support, guidance and inspiration during ups and downs in my research. I know I must have looked clueless during my first year, but you never hesitated in giving up your time to enthusiastically discuss my research. Thank you for the amazing experience and I wish you the best of luck.

Sincere acknowledgements go to the members of the assessment committee, Prof.

Johan Hofkens, Prof. Christoph Arenz and Prof. Antoine van Oijen for their time

and efforts to evaluate and approve this thesis, and for the nice comments and suggestions.

Next, I would like to thank several researchers with whom I have collaborated, whose work is acknowledged accordingly in the text. My work would not have been complete without their input. I express a tremendous amount of respect and appreciation to Prof. Thorben Cordes. Dear Thorben, I am lucky that part of my PhD projects were supervised by you. Our interaction were condensed and focused, however, I appreciate the outcome of each discussion. Thank you very much for your generosity and for many supports. At the meantime, I would like to thank your group member: Jasper and Jochem. Your great efforts helped me on my work and I learned a lot from the work together with you.

Many thanks to Ursula and Karin for the help at the start and during my PhD with all the paper work, even after I left. Thanks a lot.

I would like to acknowledge my funding body the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Thanks for the financial support for my PhD study, which gave me the opportunity to go abroad and study. In particular, I appreciate the help of the Education Section of Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands. I am also grateful to my Graduate University,

Wuhan University, for supporting me applying the CSC grant.

A special acknowledgement goes to former and current members in the group of Polymer Chemistry and Bioengineering and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials at University of Groningen. All of you had contributed greatly to my research and life.

Lifei, I’m incredibly proud and happy to have worked with you. You are one of the

most talented organic chemists that I know. I sometimes feel you have an infinite amount of chemistry knowledge, and have taught me more than you may ever realize. I would not be the scientist I am now without your guidance. Meanwhile, you are an amazing guy that truly cares about the people around you. I really appreciate everything that you have done for me. Kai, you can’t imagine how much I respect the way you handle life. You may not realize or agree, but you are one of the

strongest, most hard working and passionate scientists I know and that is really inspiring. I’m convinced that you will achieve your career with a great success. Lifei and Kai, I wish you every bit of luck in your scientific career and lots of love for you and your family.

Jan willem and Agnieszka, you were the first and foremost person to guide me

through the practical lab work. Your vast knowledge and relentless attention to detail have taught me a great deal. Your door was always open for even the silliest of questions and I want to thank you for the support and advice I got from you. You both are brilliant personality. I wish you all the best.

Avishek, you are without a double one of my most valued colleagues and friends.

Not only have I learned a great deal from you. You have boosted my confidence and made me grow as an independent scientist. Without your help, chapters 4 and 5 would simply not have existed. Thank you for everything that you have done and I wish you the best of luck for the next step in your career.

Much of this research would not have been possible without the aid given by the support staff. Mark, thank you for your inspiration and help throughout my PhD, you are a true asset to the group. Thank you for your continuous support by keeping the lab in top condition. I thank Jur Wildeman for the endless list of help and assistance. Thank you for everything.

Lei, Meng, Pei, Agnieszka, Alina, Jennifer and Eliza you are without a doubt the

most amazing person and sweetest people I have ever met. I still remember we went out together, knitted together and danced together. It was a great experience, also the food you made was very impressive. I wish you and your family the best of luck and happiness and I hope we will still see each other from time to time. Thank you for everything.

I wish to thank my colleagues for sharing their knowledge and expertise, before I knew how to fend for myself: Qing, Diego, Wei, Pavlo, Jun, Jing, Tiancai, Chao,

Hongyan, Pengkun, Shuaidong, Miancheng, Yu, Xintong, Kseniya and Gurudas.

It was pleasure to work with them over the past few years. I have been blessed with these awesome colleagues and friends that have made my time in Groningen an amazing one.

My studies would not have been possible without the love and support of my friends and family. I would like to thank my parents Guanghui and Xiaobin for always having faith in me and providing me unconditional support throughout my life. There are truly no words to describe how grateful and proud I am to be their daughter. Additionally, I would like to thank my parents in-law Jie and Xiaoling, for raising an amazing son and embracing me as part of their family.

My greatest thanks must go to Shuo, my beloved husband and best friend, for accompanying me through all the good and bad times in my life. Your appearing in my life is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Thank you for encouraging me and making me a better person. Hold my hand. Don't let go.
