Barend W. Florijn was born on October 18th 1987 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands
and completed VWO secondary school in Rotterdam in 2006. Following secondary school he studied Law (Leiden University) and Medicine in 2008 (Leiden University Medical Center, LUMC) and graduated in 2014. During his studies he worked as a teaching assistant at the Department of Surgery and started a research project at the Medical Psychology Department under supervision of prof. dr. A.A. Kaptein and at the Department of Internal Medicine (Nephrology) under supervision of dr. D. Soonawala. In addition, he was part of the Examination Appeals Board (College van Beroep voor de Examens, CBE) of the Leiden University. The doctoral research described in this thesis was conducted from 2014 through 2018 at the Department of Internal Medicine (Nephrology) and the Einthoven Laboratory for Vascular and Regenerative Medicine of the LUMC under supervision of prof. dr. A.J. van Zonneveld. The research of this thesis was presented at the ASN Congress in Chicago in 2016, the ISEV congressed in Washington in 2014 and Rotterdam in 2016 and the Non-Coding RNA congress in Keystone Colorado in 2018. Moreover, based on his research he obtained a grant from the Diabetesfonds in 2018 (Doorbraakbeurs) entitled ‘Estrogen driven posttranscriptional control of metabolism: the missing link in gestational diabetes’. During these years of research he was engaged in the development, coordination and organization of the half minor Heart and Boodvessels (2014-2018), which was nominated as best half minor in 2018. In addition, he obtained a university teaching certifi cate (BKO) in 2018 and was a member of the team that won the Kolf Battle of the Universities (organized by the the Dutch Kidney Foundation). In 2019, he worked as a resident in Internal Medicine at the Haga Hospital, The Hague and as a resident in Neurology at the Reinier de Graaf Hospital (dr. L. Aerden). July 2020, he started as a neurologist in training at the LUMC (dr. C.S.M. Straathof).

Dankwoord
