2 On the 27th of August 2017, the Brazilian president Michel Temer has given permission to abolish an Amazonian reserve the size of Denmark, instigating concerns of an influx of mineral companies, road-builders and workers into the Amazon forest (Watss, 2017). Randolfe Rodrigues of the Sustainability Network party described the dissolution of the Renca reserve, which has a surface of 46,000 square kilometer, as the biggest attack on the Amazon of the last 50 years. The destruction of the rainforest is a problem that occurs for a long time, but there are still no permanent sollutions for it. This topic has been in articles, news and newspapers for years, but the fact is that most of the people ignore this problem. In this article the following will be discussed in order: consequences, causes and the prevention of the Amazon destruction.

Causes of the Amazon destruction

There are three big reasons for the question why the forest is being destroyed. The first reason is the population pressure, tropical nations have the world’s highest population growth rate. The population of Latin America nearly tripled between 1950 and 1990, rising from 166 to 448 million residents (Laurance, 1999). More people means more places to live, so obviously more trees need to be chopped down. Many empirical studies concluded that the population size of residents in Latin America explain about two-thirds of the variation in mean rates of rainforest destruction. The second reason is the fact that Latin America has weak institutions and poor policies. Brazil has a weak enforcement of legislation to protect forests, this means that laws are not executed strictly. In the past, forest offenders have ignored the Brazilian environmental laws and 6% of the forest offenders did not pay the fines they received (Laurance, 1999). The final cause is the trade liberalization, in the era we are living trade liberalization and international free-trade agreements have increased drastically. Those two aspects are promoting greater foreign investments in tropical resource-extraction industries, that leads to more fabrics and obviously less trees (Laurance, 1999).

The impact of the Amazon destruction

As a result of the before mentioned causes of the Amazon deforestation, there occur three crucial consequences. First of all, the destruction of the amazon forest is a threat to the biodiversity. The intense pace of forest destruction is causing frightful dislocations and even extinctions for a various of species of animals. The people who are destroying the amazon forest are coming from other countries and they bring several diseases with them, which causes severly ilnesses for the inhabitants of the Amazon forest (Laurance, 1999). Secondly, the most important impact of the tropical forest destruction is the loss of natural ecosystem services. Rainforests play a crucial role in keeping our planet liveable, for example forests are maintening the stability of rivers and watersheds. By destroying the forest near the rivers and watersheds disastrous floods were caused in America resulting in the thousands of death and billions of dollar in damage (Laurance, 1999). Finally, the last consequence is the effect of amazon destruction on a global scale. The rapid burning, logging and fragmenting of the Amazon forest causes dangerous greenhouse gasses such as methane and carbon dioxide to reach the sky and effect the ozone layer. The loss of the tropical forest cover causes an

(Laurance, 1999).

Prevention of rainforest destruction

Despite the disastrous consequences mentioned before, there are also methods to prevent rainforest destruction. For instance, mapping, changing politics and company corporations. Researchers have tried mapping all fallen trees and untouched tree areas, afterwards they marked them. In this method more already fallen trees will be used and less trees that still are harvesting (Pereira, Zweede, Asner & Keller, 2002). Another method is changing politics, by cracking down on corruption and ensuring fair enforcement of forest conservation rules deforestation can be reduced. The last method depends on powerful companies, they have the power to destroy the Amazon forest, but those companies also have the power to save it. Companies can set a ambitious target to maximize the use of recycled wood, pulp, paper and fiber in their products (http://www.greenpeace.org). To conclude, humans have to work together in order to save the Amazon forest.
