Bastiaan Pieter Vierhout was born on April 16th 1972 in Leiden, The Netherlands. Bas attended high school at the Jacobus College in Enschede from which he graduated in 1990. Because of the numerus fixus he started his medical study in Leuven, Belgium from which he graduated in 1999. He was accepted as a resident in training to become a surgeon and started his first year in UZ Gasthuisberg (Prof. dr. P. Broos). During his second year in Turnhout (Dr. J. Onsea), he decided to switch his residency to the Netherlands and was accepted to work his first two years in the RKZ Beverwijk (Prof.dr. R.S. Breederveld). During his shortened period in the VU medical center (Prof.dr. J.A. Rauwerda) he published two papers. One on the follow up after femoral fractures in children and the second on a vascular case report. In 2006 he continued his training in the Rijnland Hospital (Dr. S.A. Da Costa). During this year his research on surgical site infections started. After an exploratory year in Lima, Perú (Dr. F. Bautista Sanchez) he returned to the Netherlands. Here he joined the staff in 2008, in Assen. During his first years in the Wilhelmina Hospital Assen, he simultaneously visited the Isala hospital and the UMCG to register for his vascular exam. He continued monitoring his complications and the wound infec-tions. After a clinical trial and a grant, his research matured and under the inspiring supervision of Prof.dr. C.J.A.M. Zeebregts he was able to realize this thesis.
Currently, Bas is working at the WZA as a vascular surgeon with a trauma certificate and he is the president of the regional surgeon association of Drenthe and Southern Groningen; Chirurgen Coöperatie Noordoost Nederland, a.k.a. ChiCoN B.V.
