CURRICULUM vITAE

Aleksander Grabiec was born in Kraków, Poland, on 13 March 1984. In 2002 he started his MSc course in biotechnology at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. After completing his practical training at the Department of Cell Biochemistry, focusing on regulation of cytokine activity by bacterial proteolytic enzymes, he joined the Department of Experimental Immunology and the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam as an exchange student within the Socrates/Erasmus programme. The results of the 7-month research project carried out in the group of Dr. Kris Reedquist, during which he analyzed changes in protein acetylation in the synovial tissue of rheumatoid arthritis patients, led to a masters thesis which he defended in June 2007, obtaining a MSc degree with specialisation in biochemistry from the Jagiellonian University. In 2006 he was awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education for academic excellence. In 2009 he received an award from the Polish Association for Laboratory Medicine for outstanding MSc thesis.

The project initiated during his MSc internship was subsequently extended and, since September 2007, he has continued his work at the Academic Medical Center under the supervision of Dr. Reedquist and Prof. dr. Paul-Peter Tak as a PhD student. During his PhD research, he studied the relationships of protein acetylation, a central regulator of cellular signaling and epigenetic events, and histone deacetylase expression with inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis, as well as the therapeutic potential of histone deacetylase inhibitors in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The results of these studies, which were completed in June 2012, are the subject of the present thesis.
