Tumor markers in T1-T2 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Considerations on a clinical and biological level J.E. Wachters

1. Reporting negative results is detrimental for further tumor marker research (this thesis).

2. Studies that do not differentiate between supraglottic and glottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas will not be able to identify relevant predictive/ prognostic tumor markers for radioresponse (this thesis).

3. The negligible predictive value of endogenous markers of hypoxia in T1-T2 supraglottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma is emphasized by its expression pattern (this thesis).

4. Slow pharmacokinetic characteristics hamper the effectivity of hypoxia targeted PET-scans (this thesis).

5. Dual functions of a protein like FADD, potentially distort its value as a predictor of clinical outcome (this thesis).

6. The association between PTEN expression and local control in supraglottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas treated with radiotherapy only, supports a role for PTEN in DNA-repair rather than tumor suppression (this thesis).

7. Health care retrenchments are an indication of social and moral decay (Lancet 2013; 381: 1323–31).
