The Hare or the Tortoise?
Modeling Optimal Speed-Accuracy Tradeoff Settings Don van Ravenzwaaij
Once upon a time Mr. Hare was bragging about how fast he could run.
“No-one is as fast as I am!” boomed Mr. Hare and laughed at the slow Mr. Tortoise. Mr. Tortoise did not like being made fun of and challenged Mr. Hare to a race.
“What a joke!" cried Mr. Hare arrogantly, “have it your way Mr. Tortoise, a race it is!”
And so the race begun, and Mr. Hare was so fast he soon lost sight of Mr. Tortoise, who was plodding along far behind. About halfway to the finish, Mr. Hare stopped to think for a minute. "Ha!" said Mr. Hare, "I have so much time to win this race, I can take a little nap!"
And so he rolled up against a tree and dozed off.
But Mr. Tortoise slowly continued, taking one step after another, coming ever closer to the finish line.
And when finally Mr. Hare woke up from his nap, he cried. "Oops, I overslept!" and ran faster than he ever did before. But just as he caught sight of the finish, Mr. Tortoise took his final step and won the race, leaving a humiliated and disgruntled Mr. Hare in its wake.
