More than four years of researching, hypothesizing, planning and experimenting, as well as more than 200 pages of thesis later, finally, my time as a PhD candidate comes to an end. I am looking back at times of advances and drawbacks, excitement and frustration. Not only have I learned a lot about the matter discussed in this thesis, but also about the scientific process in general as well as about myself. I suppose, a PhD is named a doctor of philosophy for a reason.
To conclude, I would like to express my gratitude to everybody who helped me in one or the other way to reach this milestone.
First of all I would like to thank my daily supervisor Maike for her constant efforts from the first to the last moment of this project. Additionally, my thanks go to my promotor Willem for his great support, especially in the writing process. Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge my external advisors Robert-Jan and Bas for being open to my question on the 3C methodology.
Importantly, I would also like to thank the UvA for funding my project and thereby giving me the opportunity to participate in independent, fundamental research.
All my colleagues in the former Synthetic Systems Biology and Nuclear Organization Group and the current Plant Development and Epigenetics Group I would like to thank for the friendly and constructive environment during my project. Especially my PostDoc- and PI- colleagues I would like to thank for sharing their wisdom on various matters.
Over the time so many of my colleagues came and went away again that I decided at this point to abstain from putting single people forward. You all should know that you are awesome and I wish you all the best for your future!
Outside of my lab I am much obliged to collaborators and advisors in Caroline’s lab in Norwich, Jay’s lab in Ohio, Pepe’s lab in Warwick, as well as Pawel and Dimitris in Poznan.

Of course, besides work, there were other experiences that shaped my Amsterdam-adventure as well. For example, I would like to give a shout-out to all my peers at the PhD councils, especially Anne, Bram, Olga, and Soraya at FNWI, as well as Reuben, Ada and Dorota at SILS. Together with you, the involvement in the faculty organization was not only insightful but also very enjoyable.
With very much appreciation I got to know many very friendly people at the UvA on a personal level such as Tanneke and Jolanda, Ludek, Annemarie, Maaike, Carlos, Heike, Sara, Dani and Ale, and many more. Special thanks go to Tineke, my former yoga teacher at USC for her great classes and her positive energy. Namaste!
Above all, I would like to thank my dear friends Kathrin, Maria, Marco and Dominik, as well as Julian. You guys gave me awesome support when I needed it the most, as well as, even more important, just great memories that I will keep for my life. I hope we will manage to keep in touch, although life already started to scatter us all over Europe again.
